Exploring Life & Business with Josiane Faubert of PICHA Stock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josiane Faubert.

Hi Josiane, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Josiane Faubert. I was born in Gabon and I moved to the United States while I was in college. I graduated from the University of San Francisco. After spending years in DC, New York and London, I am now in Seattle with my husband and three children. I am a creative at heart and passionate about redefining the visual stories of Africa and the Black diaspora. This led me to start my company PICHA Stock which curates authentic Afrocentric visuals that support the equal and adequate representation of Black communities in the global conversations.

Many years before I started photography, I used oil painting to connect with my roots. It started while I was in college. Painting allowed me to travel back home and find inner peace. Today, I am usually with my camera shooting for PICHA. In 2019, I started illustrations which I have grown to really enjoy as well.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Being a creative entrepreneur is not easy, especially when trying to put together a marketplace. It takes a lot of resilience and commitment into persuading creatives to be part of PICHA. The road is never smooth when you are an entrepreneur but for me, the flexibility that I have, especially trying to raise my family is a benefit that makes all this journey worth it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
PICHA is a niche stock photography platform dedicated to the representation of Black / African creatives. I am very proud to say that we offer creatives a 50% commission rate which is pretty much unseen in the industry. Our images get licensed by bloggers, web designers, marketers, and advertisers in search of visuals with a diversity angle. We have been trusted by major brands, which is very rewarding.

What’s next?
We have just launched a call to action to marketers and advertisers through the Breaking barriers collection to be more inclusive. Breaking Barriers is a diverse stock image collection dedicated to the authentic representation of people with disabilities in the media. Our goal is also to expand our community of creatives and to partner with different marketers in the future.
