Exploring Life & Business with Naombi Shokes of Geechie Rootz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Naombi Shokes.

Hi Naombi, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We started selling dram size bottles of oil out of a fish tackle box while I was working full-time. We then started to vend and do pop-ups on the weekends. We contacted Tanger about doing small Saturdays or something and they told us about the kiosk. We did that for a couple of months but it got cold and found a spot on the skid away.

The location wasn’t great so we came back to Tanger to an actual store at about 1000 sq ft but quickly outgrew that spot. New York and co moved out and we swooped into this suite totaling about 4500 sq ft. We do just as God tells us to move and help who He tells us to help.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road has been consistently smooth. Even though COVID and the pandemic have been really hard for some, it was a blessing for us and we stepped out on faith through it all. Our sales continue to grow and we are helping to get and keep the culture alive not just for black history month but 365 days a year

We’ve been impressed with Geechie Rootz, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We specialize in all things African. We offer clothing, instruments, oils, incense, soaps, organic skin and hair care, and more. We are known for our customer service. We offer quality products at a reasonable price

What were you like growing up?
I was quiet and shy growing up unless I felt like I was around ppl where I could be myself. I’m an avid reader, borderline addicted. I love to dance and we used to teach West African drum and dance professionally for years in SC and GA.
