Exploring Life & Business with Nina Norstrom of Transformational Living Wellness Lifestyle — TLWL, Inc.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina Norstrom.

Nina Norstrom

Hi Nina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Whenever I’m asked for an interview about my story, my journey, and my life; seemingly, I make the same statement over, and over, and over again. All of those three integral parts bring me to the beginning. Yes, it was the start of my journey that threw me into the shadow of darkness. While telling it, I won’t go back all the way. Anyone, who reads this interview may want to sit back, relax, and get ready to walk the trail alongside me.

I have given myself many titles. Those classifications positioned me into the roles of artist, award-winning author, daughter, caregiver, coach, educator, experiences, friend, hat-wearing sista, life-changer, mentor, mistress, mother, sister, speaker, survivor, teacher, volunteer, wife, wounded warrior, the writer, and entrepreneur.

Throughout my life, I’ve worn many hats. And those hat-wearing years have brought on powerful and insightful lessons. Those aforementioned titles are the glue that holds me together. No, my life didn’t start that way; but it taught me about the STUFF that happens in life. It took decades of conquering, struggling, battling inside demons at their loudest voice, and overcoming many obstacles. Yes, you’ve read it correctly I used the title Demons. When it boils down to it, let’s admit, we have those inner demons waiting to escape, which makes our lives wreak havoc.

There were times I didn’t know I would survive the journey to be where I am today. I can’t begin to reveal every gory detail that happened throughout those decades. Certainly, it wasn’t a life of peace and harmony. And definitely, it was not a bed of roses. I’ve been to hell and back — even seen the darkest of the night. There are not enough days in a week to afford time to unveil every pinch of my life. During those hard and painful times, feelings of grief, sadness, and anger would rush to the top of my emotions. All the medications taken couldn’t ease the pain endured. Time after time, I found myself reaching for the two things that gave me a sigh of relief — my journal and tuning in to the sound of music. What gave me comfort was putting words on paper and, with each stroke of my pain, writing from the meaning of its musical notes. It was as though those emotions found a comforting space. Without a thought about its process, writing became a healing vessel. It did not matter what I wrote, as long as I got it down, and kept writing, which gave those words a haven. It was as though the writing gained control of my emotions and shielded me from the pain.

I have written a memoir about my journey, a reflection of the struggles and challenges faced. Before I wrote the story, it was the inside pages of my diary and pretty painful to express. Those diary entries help to establish emotional connections. You can find this published piece under, “Not a Blueprint It’s the Shoe Prints that Matter: A Journey Through Toxic Relationships.”

Behind those covered pages, you are bound to discover a hell of a lot more than what is revealed here. What I’ve told you in my story introduces you to the family—the little girl that lives inside me, my siblings, my growing-up years, my affairs, and my life as a mother, and a wife. If you desire a good memoir that expresses anger, brokenness, comedy, family dynamics, drama, hate, heartbreaks, laughter, love, rage, relationships, revenge, and all that other stuff that brings one to their knees when drowning in a flood of tears That’s where you’ll discover me—and that little girl who lives inside. Yes, I did a lot, and it encompassed years of journaling. Since then, I’ve reconnected to my faith and discovered the challenges of life, as lessons learned. Those things that bring on the good, the bad, and the ugliness. Talk about a life with drama; I’ve experienced it to the umpteenth degree.

Strangely, I was once that Humpty Dumpty who was broken into pieces. During my working career, recalling a memory of the past, co-workers would refer to me as the Crazy Lady. Amazingly, there was nothing humous about that statement. People, be mindful when judging others, you never know the battles one has faced. One day, their journey may be yours. It amazes me how I’ve come back strong and survived the ordeal. Picking up those broken pieces and putting my life together has been a challenge. Yet, I did! I’ve come to realize that when we’re broken, it’s not an overnight fix – although we’re fixable. Aren’t we all broken and beautiful? Isn’t that what the artist Kelly Brianne has told us in her song titled, I’m Broken and It’s Beautiful?

For now, know that it has been a life-changing experience, and each mentionable moment represents pieces—tiny, shattered, and broken pieces of myself. Those past times have shaped the person I am today. Understand, I can’t go back and wipe away the ugliness from my past, I was a horrible and troubled person. But I can move forward to make a difference in the present and future. Overall, I will not and must not allow my past mistakes and pain to define me. I’m using them as a stepping stone to becoming a better version of myself. In the past, it was as though my caterpillar shell radically transformed into that gorgeous, blooming yellow butterfly that nested upon beautiful yellow flowers. For years, it was the only image anyone ever saw of me when asked to present a photo. I’ve blossomed since then and broken through its outer layer.

As for journeys, and the challenges of broken family dynamics, I’ve learned to embrace the family as a whole, “loving them from a distance.” It’s my way to embrace family relationships, their complexity, the need for boundaries, and self-care.
After going through a marital divorce, experiencing a combination of losses, battling complicated grief, suffering from a major depressive disorder, attempting suicide, being diagnosed with PTSD, and witnessing the negative effects of COVID-19, I’ve birthed a nonprofit entity. Having a passion for my daughter’s existence, and helping others who faced similar challenges, has driven me to become a support vessel and resource sharer.

I believe everyone has moments in life where they feel regrettable or wish they could turn back time. It’s a natural part of the human experience. What’s remarkable is that I’ve recognized the value in those experiences, despite the pain, the hurt, or the sadness they may have brought. Embracing all of those emotions, I’ve climbed many hills and mountains, while pushing through those rough patches. The idea of individuals emerging from traumatic experiences with a renowned sense of purpose, resilience, and wisdom—I’m not just surviving those experiences; I’ve thrived because of them.

I have acquired the ability to forgive and understand the importance of seeking forgiveness. Recognizing that forgiveness is not a display of weakness but rather a means to foster personal well-being. It is not synonymous with vulnerability or fragility. Instead, it is a strong and empowering act of self-care and liberation. I have released all grudges and resentments, liberating myself from the burden of negativity and allowing space for a more optimistic and compassionate perspective to flourish.

You’ve heard the phrase, Walk by Faith, Not by Sight. It rings true because I could not see beyond the maze of my experiences. There is a bright side to being on this new journey. It was that light that shone through the darkness. And all I had to do was follow it.

Embracing my experiences of brokenness, I understand the importance of having a safe and non-judgmental space to share one’s struggles and emotions. By creating this space for others, I hope they’ll feel less alone and more equipped to navigate their challenges. If I had to leave a message to readers from my words in print, this is what I’d like them to receive: “When we take a journey, no one walks alone. My journey is their journey. Some tiny footprint that was made along the way, will have been theirs.”

I’ve dedicated energy to giving back to others and find it to be a most rewarding experience. It is one of the reasons my new business was formed. I’m still nurturing my workshops at the prison (Clayton County Transitional Center) and helping others in their transformation—it’s been over five years now. I’ve taken on a greater responsibility by founding and operating a charitable nonprofit entity. I am super excited to be moving forward with the next chapter in my life. Yet, writing will be dearest to my heart. It’s where I started an entrepreneurial role.

Keep checking back! I’m putting some effort into my next writing endeavor. This story is going to be incredibly fascinating. The material is suitable for teens and adults alike. You would want to read this one instead of missing it. And when you do, leave me some feedback.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Humm, that’s an interesting question (to say the least). I’ll keep it short and simple. No, it wasn’t a smooth journey. There were quite a few hiccups along the way. A lot of those obstacles are found in my memoir. Early on in this writing, I believe I’ve shared with you some snippets about struggles. There’s no need to say more, right?

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

The Healing Room (To be installed at secured location)

For healing, filled with HOPE and INSPIRATION

This particular sanctuary is often referred to as a “place of strategic planning” by many. In our organizational structure, it will be crafted to be a tranquil, well-established, and focused environment. Its primary goal is to offer solace and protection for our warriors who are facing challenges, allowing them to confront their fears, wipe away their tears, address various issues, and open themselves spiritually. The ultimate aim is to nurture a deeper connection with a higher power if the individual desires.

The Hug Booth — gives out a 30-second hug
Engaging in a 30-second hug from The Hug Booth can have a positive impact on one’s health. This simple act of physical affection has been shown to promote relaxation, reduce stress, boost the immune system, regulate sleep hormones, lower blood pressure, and improve emotional well-being. By incorporating daily hugs into your routine, you can contribute to better cardiovascular health and overall well-being. It will be utilized as a service to our clients.

Music Therapy

Through the implementation of music therapy in a group setting, injured warriors will have the opportunity to engage in a service/program that aims to facilitate the reconnection of their minds and bodies. The main objective is to encourage attendees to openly express their emotions and moods. This therapeutic approach is designed to nurture all aspects of an individual’s life, including physical, emotional, psychological, and behavioral domains. Our holistic approach integrates these dimensions of being, encompassing the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects. Ultimately, this service/program acts as a mood enhancer, particularly through the power of musical experiences.

Reiki Therapy

We are thrilled to incorporate Reiki Therapy into our workshops. Reiki utilized as an alternative healing practice, entails the practitioner channeling healing energy toward the recipient, aiming to alleviate stress, pain, and fatigue while fostering the flow of positive energy. This offering strives to improve the overall health and well-being of individuals who have experienced battle wounds. It is an outstanding approach to addressing both mental and physical well-being, while also offering numerous other health benefits.

Community Engagement

Engaging with the community provides opportunities to establish new relationships and promote a common interest in the core values of the organization. It helps to nurture strong ties with local businesses, creating new connections and strengthening existing ones. Some key areas to explore include:
– Establishing partnerships within the community
– Volunteering at shelters to support those in need
– Leading workshops at correctional facilities
– Offering food aid and specialized items to vulnerable populations
– Raising awareness about the organization’s mission and impact within the community
– And more.

These are some services offered . . .

BLESSING PACKAGES & CARE GIFTS

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.“ Matthew 25:35-37

As part of our commitment to supporting individuals in difficult circumstances, we are dedicated to offering a wide selection of items for packages and blessing gifts. These products will be distributed to different locations and individuals who have experienced various challenges such as being wounded warriors, homelessness, human trafficking, addiction and incarceration recovery, domestic violence, and other comparable situations. The range of specialty items encompasses a variety of options, including but not limited to personal hygiene, blankets, socks, clothing, and food snacks.

The Financial Assistance Application

At TLWL, Inc., we understand that financial challenges can greatly ease the burden on individuals who are going through difficult times by providing them with access to financial assistance. Presently, this service is temporarily unavailable due to lack of funds.

I appreciate all the services and programs available, but the hugging booth, music therapy, and serving the blessing gifts are the ones that have me filled with an overflow as they come to life. To understand the power of the overflow, you must listen to the lyrics by Tasha Cobbs, “Fill Me Up / Overflow.”

Our Wares consider them your Treasures’ Delights . . .

We value your significance! This is precisely why we have crafted merchandise items to assist in upholding our purpose, where we serve as a guiding light for healing and personal growth, emerging triumphantly from the depths of adversity. The entirety of the proceeds will contribute towards our ongoing endeavors to provide programs, wellness services, and proactive assistance to individuals who have encountered various forms of hardship or brokenness. You are never alone. Your pain is our pain, your battles are our battles, your struggles are our struggles, and when you feel defeated, we will be there to lift you. No one should face hardships in insolation. Remember, we stand in unity!

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?

What makes you happy? Why?

Coming back from the darkness and seeing the daylight. . . .

I am discovering my true self and realizing that I can overcome any obstacles. Even in the darkest times, I remind myself that others have faced even greater challenges. How frequently do we receive opportunities for redemption? When we do, it is crucial to reflect on how we utilize them. Lessons not only serve as a means of personal growth but also as a way to inspire and help others.

Happiness comes in all shapes and sizes. I’m extremely happy because I’m blessed. First and foremost, “Giving honor to my Creator for this new journey I’m walking on.” It’s a blessing to work among the most beautiful people—the board members. I could not have asked for a greater group of people to walk this mission alongside. It is their energy that encourages me to continuously move forward. I am deeply grateful for the in-kind support we have received from the businesses that have embraced our mission. It brings immense joy to express my heartfelt appreciation to companies such as Chick-fil-A, CharityWorks, Costco, Kendra Scott, Target, and many others who willingly extended a helping hand.
