Hidden Gems: Meet Alicja Colon of Alicja Colon Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicja Colon.

Alicja, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In the early ‘90s, my father owned a vinyl sign shop. He would design logos, have a plotter cut it out, then apply it to windows, vans, or magnetic sheets. This was my introduction to design and business.

At 12, I helped to clean up logos and apply them to business windows during the nights and weekends.

Since then, creative career has certainly had many twists and turns. The driver was rarely me but instead curiosity.

First, I dove into graphic design, continuing my 2d design skills that were started in my early teens. From there, I traded the artboards for apertures as I discovered photography. Photography is a deep mistress, as there’s many facets to become enraptured by.

I started photographing children and family in Savannah, then added weddings when I moved to Miami. When I returned to Savannah, I added commercial, editorial, and product photography to my services.

During those seasons, there times I broke away and explored other creative outlets, but now I’m with my love again: filling my days with creating modern sets for beauty and boudoir session and producing commercial shoots.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While I wished my journey had been smooth, I’m thankful it hasn’t been. My #1 one obstacle has been myself.

My self-limiting beliefs continually battle my grandiose vision of where I want to take my photography skills and business.

I have to remember small steps are still progressing.

We’ve been impressed with Alicja Colon Photography, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have two different businesses – the first is beauty photography.

My beauty photography is modern, art-infused portraiture. Ladies will be transformed then step into an editorial-quality fashion ad.

Sets do rotate, to keep up with my curiosity, I’ll ensure that we stay modern and fresh.

This includes boudoir photography – where I’ve had clients tear up at how lovely they look. Seeing women fully embrace themselves is another level of satisfaction for me.

Secondly, I have a national commercial photography brand. I’ve served clients on both coasts.

Since I was a designer first, I understand brand. My process starts with developing photography styles, then producing the shoot – everything from gathering the locations, models, and styling both. The photography part is the most fun, but pre-production is a vital step.

My style is pretty flexible, but I adore dramatic imagery. The more the contrast, the better the image, in my opinion.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Spending time with people and learning from them makes me the most happy.

Everyone has such interesting stories, experiences, and insights. They help color my world or fill in parts that were void.
