Today we’d like to introduce you to April Floyd.
Hi April, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The concept of Miss Katies Sweets started back in 2016. It was my side hustle…I started making candy apples and treats as a way to make extra income. I moved to outside of Charleston South Carolina, and food trucks were just starting to become a thing. I jumped on board as a pop-up with my desserts and that fueled me to want to start my own food truck. In 2019 I was able to finally secure an actual food trailer, and I’ve been rolling ever since. I love what I do. It enabled me to be able to work and provide for my family and also be present for my family. I’ve also began teaching my children the ropes of the business. So at a young age, they’ve been immersed in entrepreneurship. They’ve learned most of the ins and outs of the daily operations of running our food truck. We service from Savannah to Charleston and all the areas in between. We’ve even traveled to Myrtle Beach for weddings and North Carolina as well.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
So, owning a food truck has not been a smooth road at all. But as they say, anything worth having is worth working hard for. There’s always things that come up, such as equipment failures, mechanical breakdowns, going to events that aren’t profitable, etc. It’s just the nature of the beast. Especially during the pandemic where there were times where you couldn’t even get supplies. Or the fact that the price of things that we needed for everyday use quadrupled in price like cooking oil for example. This definitely isn’t for the faint of heart.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Miss Katie’s Sweets?
Miss Katie’s Sweets is a novelty dessert food truck. We specialize in deep-fried carnival-style desserts such as funnel cakes and deep-fried cheesecake bites. Don’t sleep on our banana pudding jars. We travel the Lowcountry serving up delicious desserts & sweet treats. We are the 2017 Judges Choice winner of the Charleston Food Wars Battle of the food trucks. We are available for bookings for birthday parties weddings, corporate events, community events, school events, and things of the sorts.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like most about Savannah is the historic charm and the people that makeup Savannah. I also like the fact that the city is becoming more food truck friendly. What I like least about the city is the number of community events that go on. I feel like Savanna needs a lot more to engage the people that are here.
