Hidden Gems: Meet Brendan Gannon of Gannon Organics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brendan Gannon.

Hi Brendan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I first got interested in farming in 2010 after graduating from college. I studied journalism at the College of Charleston and moved to New York City to pursue a career in that field, but I found myself drawn to urban agriculture.

I interned at an urban farm in Manhattan’s Battery Park and managed a garden for a Michelin star restaurant in Brooklyn. I wanted more experience and moved to upstate New York where I worked on farms in the Hudson Valley and the Catskill Mountains.

In 2016, I moved back down south and ended up being the field manager at Canewater Farm, an organic farm an hour south of Savannah.

In November 2019, I started Gannon Organics.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting the farm has been a smooth road given the circumstances. I started the farm on a very limited budget of $1500.00 and a few months after starting up the farm the pandemic began. I was selling primarily to restaurants at the time and that revenue stream almost completely shut down so I had to do a lot of pivoting.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Gannon Organics?
Gannon Organics is a small diversified vegetable farm in Savannah Georgia. We grow using organic methods that regenerate the soil and produce healthy, chemical-free, and nutrient-dense food.

We sell at Forsyth Farmers Market and to local restaurants. We really really care about the quality of our products and take pride in our work.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
My family matters most to me and the farm second. Farming will take up all of your time if you let it, so it is important to set time aside for your loved ones and yourself.
