Hidden Gems: Meet Bryson Custer of NeuroEnergetics Spine & Sport

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryson Custer.

Hi Bryson, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I began my journey by thinking that running a copious number of miles sounded like fun. Indeed, it was, as joining the cross country and track teams in high school brought me a large amount of joy. Unfortunately, a variety of injuries caught me before the finish line. A fellow injured teammate of mine discovered a chiropractor a few towns over who practiced a cool new muscle treatment, and we both found his expertise to be just what we needed to continue running our best. As I graduated high school, I knew I didn’t want to see any young athletes struggle with their bodies falling apart the way I did. This made it easy to choose the preventative side of health and wellness as my focus.

Fast forward to my stint at the University of Pittsburgh. I became fascinated with exercise physiology and the body’s performance capabilities while studying Health & Human Development, follow-up Exercise Physiology Masters, and training in Pitt’s Neuromuscular Research Laboratory & Warrior Human Performance Research Center. I collected knowledge in coaching the body to its pinnacle, but every time I tried to do it for myself, I would run up against a wall about 3 months into training. Old injuries resurfacing and forcing me to cut back. I clearly missed something in my original rehab.

Realizing it was time to go back to school and fill the knowledge gaps, I moved to Florida and earned my Doctorate of Chiropractic Medicine at Palmer College of Chiropractic. This holistic health modality worked perfectly to modulate pain as I rebuilt my foundation. I finally found joy and peace in my career! Also, I discovered I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a collagen disorder, and perhaps the culprit eating away at my foundation every time I trained too hard.

Blending nutrition, progressive training, and appropriate recovery techniques would seem to bring the whole package together, but my deeper goal was not yet attained.

My focus is currently aimed at Parker University’s post-doctoral Clinical Neuroscience program with the desire to understand why the brain and body create a disconnect and allow chronic disease and pain to thrive. It has been through this program I continue to add more specialized treatments to my arsenal. I have already completed my clinical residency hours in Texas at the Synapse Human Performance Center in neurorehabilitation and will graduate later this year.

As I began searching for more neurological answers, I realized I was unable to operate as the chiropractic physician I was capable of while working within someone else’s structure. The practice of radical healing I seek for my patients drove me to open my own office.

NeuroEnergetics Spine & Sport was born.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
In the same way, injury recovery is not linear; neither is building a business. Some days feel like I’m a great river carving what could be a new Grand Canyon in Savannah, while other days, I think there’s a beaver building a dam upstream.

One major struggle I’ve experienced so far relates to starting a family and business around the same time. Time management that also allows for my own self-care has been rough. Energy moving in a lot of different directions doesn’t always leave space for yourself, but prioritizing myself and reinforcing my own foundation has allowed for a lot of growth both in my family and at NeuroEnergetics.

Additionally, I found a hard time narrowing my focus at the office. I tend to assist patients from any angle I discover is in need. Bringing a laser sight to my treatments and allowing for space for other clinicians to fill the gaps has been the appropriate move. I strongly believe each therapeutic modality has a different piece of the puzzle in a healing journey, and no one clinician can do it all.

We’ve been impressed with NeuroEnergetics Spine & Sport, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My chiropractic office specializes in neurological therapies and brain health to lead the way back to your vitality. We focus on rebooting the brain, clearing out systemic inflammation contributing to chronic pain. We then upgrade the body’s perception of pain through the chiropractic adjustment and targeted exercises. This top-down approach leads to an empowered atmosphere where your hands are back on the steering wheel, and your stress response is in the rearview mirror.

During our extensive 30-minute appointments, we do a deep dive into what is driving your chronic pain and address every aspect of your needs. Half of the time is spent attuning the brain and body with functional eye & ear therapy and is followed up with the chiropractic adjustment and muscle integration techniques. After your hands-on care, it’s time to kick back for your nervous system cooldown in our Normatec Compression System and BrainTap headset for a guided meditation and brainwave synchronization. Additionally, there is an hour-long option for those battling severe neural dysfunction and need more support.

I am most proud of my custom-built therapeutic sensory room. I designed a vibration-based therapy modality paired with light therapy synced to music. Meditative music, such as Tibetan Bowls, is available on request; however, I like to personalize the music so it’s like your own mini-concert. I’m sure most readers will agree we choose our daily music based on our mood and emotions. When we continuously circle around a particular artist or genre, we are usually trying to connect to the message being expressed and find the same understanding deep within ourselves. By allowing your whole body to experience the music, as opposed to only through your earbuds, I believe we can more completely process life’s events and emotions we have subconsciously tied to our musical tastes.

At NeuroEnergetics, we believe therapy should be a SHORT, time-limited process – one designed to get you back to fully expressing your inner-reality. I don’t want to be your band-aid. I’d rather help you find your answers.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
During COVID, I had to focus on giving myself grace in my daily life to work through the constant disappointments. Nothing ever shows up as you expect it will, and the ability to pivot is essential. I graduated from chiropractic school in 2020 and ended up moving home for the next year before I was able to strike out with the passion I have today. While back in my hometown, the serenity prayer resurfaced for me, originally a gift from a close family member when I was 16 years old. I cemented it into my foundation for good this time, helping me find more joy in the smaller daily successes.
