Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Kelson.
Hi Christopher, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Christopher Kelson. I’m a National Hip Hop Recording artist from Baton Rouge, La. My stage name is Boxx The Hungry Genius. I started writing music at age 13. I got serious with music at 16 years old and formed a rap group with two child hood friends called “Da Wrecking Crew”. After a year or so, the group disbanded and I pursued a solo rap career and signed with a local indie label called Big Faces Entertainment. For the next * 8 years I would undergo artist development. That gave me the foundation to become the dope MC/lyricist I am today. My independent mindset drove me to become a life insurance agent and work for myself to have more time and money to do music at a high level. I began to study the music business and I would then start my own label Hungry Boy Records LLC with the money from my insurance business. My journey has still been thriving till this day with me building my fan base and performing in various cities and states. I now use my skillset and experience to develop and coach other artist, teach them the music business, and write songs for others.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. However, everything has been worth it. One of the biggest struggles along the way is understanding my mother was and still is right. She told me “everyone can’t go where you’re going.” So on the music journey of team building, the struggle of letting go has been the toughest from an emotional standpoint. Outside of that, other struggles were finances and not understanding the business. When you are an indie artist, unless you have an investor, you still have to bet on yourself and pay your bills and take care of your priorities. When you don’t understand that it’s a business, then you don’t run it as a business. When you don’t run your brand as a business, you don’t maximize opportunities as you should because of ignorance. Once I learned this was a business, I then understood you don’t need a lot of money when you have a plan. The plan can create the value and the value can create the income. Lastly, continuing to grow as a leader. If you don’t grow as a leader, then problems can be overwhelming. When you grow, the problems shrink. In closing, I think every struggle has been and still is worth it because it helped me evolve.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My record label Hungry Boy Records LLC is an indie label based out of Baton Rouge, LA. I decided to sign myself to myself as a statement of me going fully independent years ago. My label right now specializes in releasing my projects as a solo artist. I may in the next 3-5 years begin to sign and develop talent . The extending arm of my label does majority of the work now. It is called HBCU (Hungry Boy Coaching University). What it specializes in is artist development, song writing and music business coaching. What sets me apart from others is when I teach or coach others, it’s more relatable because I am an artist like them so I understand their mindset. What I am most proud of brand wise is when people book me as an artist of Hungry Boy Records, I always deliver at a high level and people are satisfied and impressed. What I want the readers to know about my brand is that we offer high quality help. Whether it’s consultation, songwriting, business coaching, or artist development. I also give entertaining performances and I put on real shows. All the music that is released under the Hungry Boy label is great quality, sounds good and resonates with the people.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as being financially independent and being able to do whatever you want to do, when you want to do it, with whoever you want to do it with. FREEDOM is success! I love being able to explore anything I’m passionate about with no constraints. And because of my freedom, I can help others get free and hit their goals. No one with their thumb on me. Mentally, spiritually and financially free is success!
