Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Webb.
Hi Gary, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I have collected military items since I was 10 years old. My father was an air force officer for over 30 years, but my mother got me interested in collecting. She was born in London and experienced 5 years of German bombing during WW2. Her stories got me reading about WW2 and then I started collecting.
I spent 10 years growing up in Europe living in Norway, France, and 4 different cities in Germany along with living in 7 American states before I was 22 years old. My collection features artifacts from the Civil War, Indian War, Spanish America War, and WW1. WW2, Korean War, Vietnam, and the Cold War period. we are highly rated on TripAdvisor, Yelp, and Google.
The museum is not a boring history lesson but a museum with stories about the items. Over 70 % of the items are named to people.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I open the museum 6 years ago and all when well. I have owned 3 businesses in Savannah since I was 23 years old, so I understand what it takes to stay in business.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Webb Military Museum?
I was lucky to have a good friend that had a large building/barn in historic Savannah, He gave me great rent, but I had to build it out costing me $159,000 which I paid cash to keep my overhead low. My background is in art. I have a BFA degree in graphic Arts from the University of GA.
So, the museum has a great look and flow. The museum is a very humble museum with great personal stories and that makes it different. I when from being the last museum on Trip Advisor to number 1 or 2 best museum in Savannah in less than 2 years and we stay on top.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Tourism is big in Savannah, so as long as our government stops shutting down the country we will grow. I have been growing every year.
