Today we’d like to introduce you to MariaNoel Polk.
Hi MariaNoel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Honestly, I didn’t start this thinking it would turn into what it is today. I just genuinely loved doing hair and makeup. It started with friends, small events, and me saying yes to any opportunity that came my way. I quickly realized it wasn’t just about making people look good, it was about how it made them feel, and that part really stuck with me.
As I got deeper into it, I knew I wanted more. I started investing in myself, my skills, my kit, and really figuring out what kind of brand I wanted to build. There was a lot of trial and error, a lot of “figure it out as you go” moments, but I just stayed consistent and kept pushing.
At some point, it stopped feeling like a side thing and became my full career. Building Southern Belle By MariaNoel has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey. I’ve been able to create something that feels elevated but still very personal, which is so important to me, especially working with brides on such meaningful days.
It definitely hasn’t been perfect. There were moments where I doubted myself or didn’t know what the next step was, but I trusted the process and kept going. Now, looking back, it’s kind of crazy to see how far it’s come, and I still feel like I’m just getting started.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road… not even close.
Finding work-life balance has probably been one of the hardest things for me. When you care this much about what you’ve built, you don’t just shut it off. There were times I was giving everything to my clients and my team, and then trying to come home and be fully present as a mom… and that pull is real.
Financially, owning a business can be stressful too. Some seasons feel amazing and everything is flowing, and then other times you’re like okay… what now? You just learn to pivot, figure it out, and keep going even when it feels a little uncertain.
And having ADHD… that’s been a journey in itself. It can make things harder when it comes to staying organized or structured, but at the same time it’s a huge part of why I’m creative and able to think differently. I’ve really had to learn how to work with it instead of fighting it.
So no, not smooth at all… but honestly, I feel like that’s what’s shaped me and my business into what it is today.
As you know, we’re big fans of Southern Belle By MariaNoel, Luxury Hair & Makeup Team. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
What I want people to know about my brand is that we are so much more than just hair and makeup. Southern Belle By MariaNoël is a luxury bridal beauty team, and everything we do is built around creating a high-end, personalized experience from beginning to end.
We are known for being calm, organized, detail obsessed, and for truly taking care of our brides. We do not believe in rushing people through the process. We take our time, we listen, and we make sure every client feels seen. For us, luxury is not just about how beautiful the final look is, it is also about how the experience feels.
One thing that really sets us apart is how personal we make everything. We do not just send a few emails and show up on the wedding day. We connect with our brides through multiple phone calls so we can really understand their vision, their timeline, their concerns, and the overall feel they want for the day. That level of communication matters, and I think it makes such a difference.
We also ask to see inspiration photos not just for the bride, but for the entire bridal party. That is a big deal to us because we want everyone to feel amazing. I always say I want the bridesmaids to feel like their hair and makeup at their friend’s wedding was even better than what they had at their own. That is the level we are trying to deliver every single time.
We put a lot of thought into the details too. From the custom touch up kits and bridal kits we create, to the way we prep for the morning, to how we guide our clients through the process, everything is intentional. We want our brides to feel taken care of, elevated, and completely confident.
What makes me most proud brand wise is that we have built something that feels luxurious but still warm. High end, but never cold. Polished, but still personal. We are there to bring beauty, yes, but also peace to the morning. We want our clients to feel supported, celebrated, and genuinely excited from the moment they book with us.
At the end of the day, our brand is about more than glam. It is about creating an experience people remember, and making women feel like the absolute best version of themselves.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
For me, risk has always been tied to faith. I don’t think I’ve ever felt 100% “ready” for anything big I’ve done… I’ve just trusted myself and gone for it.
Starting my business was a huge risk. I moved to Hilton Head Island from California in 2018 with a four month old baby and literally $300 in my bank account. I had experience working weddings back in California, but not at the level I do now, and out here… nobody knew who I was. No clients, no connections, no guarantee it was going to work. I just had to take a leap of faith and figure it out as I went.
And honestly, I don’t think people talk enough about how scary that is. There were moments where I questioned everything. But I just kept showing up, kept putting myself out there, and trusted that if I worked hard enough, it would come together.
I will say, I did not do it alone. Two women who really changed the trajectory for me were Roxanne Madera Gilleland and Beth Baldwin. I met them while I was working for a magazine as a hair and makeup artist, and they gave me a chance when I was brand new out here. They brought me into weddings, spoke highly of me, and helped get my name out there. That kind of support meant everything, and I truly don’t know if I would be where I am today without them.
So when it comes to risk, I don’t see it as being fearless. I see it as being willing to move forward even when you are scared, even when nothing is guaranteed. Every level of growth in my business has come from taking a chance on myself… and trusting that I’ll figure it out along the way.
