Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Holstein.
Hi Mary, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
After high school, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life. My mom told me to work temp jobs until I figured it out. My grandmother use to massage my feet and told me about the reflexology points. Then, I became intrigued with massage and essential oils. My mother saw my interests and told me to take a couple of tours of local massage schools.
The school was called the Academy of Somatic Healing Arts in Norcross, Georgia. I signed up instantly and graduated at the age of 21. My first job was at Spa Sydell in Alpharetta, GA where I worked for 5 years. I worked at different day spas, chiropractic offices, and I decided to audition for a cruise ship spa job in Honolulu, Hawaii. The training I had in Honolulu was for 8 weeks before I started my cruise ship job. Audrey Nichols was my boss on the ship and taught me so much. I learned how to run a luxury spa, sell amazing products, learn the protocols, and customer service. I fell in love with running a spa and realized this is what I wanted to do.
After Hawaii, I moved back to Atlanta to work for the Intercontinental Hotel Spa in Buckhead. I have a higher respect for employees that work at hotels. I definitely gained knowledge and experience at their luxury spa. While I was in Atlanta, I began making house calls for massages. My clientele started picking up and a lightbulb went off in my head. I wanted to provide an On-Demand luxury spa service mobile to all my clients. I loved Savannah, GA, and decided to move there in 2014.
There I met Marianne Ganem Poppell & Scott West with Savannah Master Calendar at a networking event. Marianne & Scott help me with my ribbon cutting party for my business. I spent two years making sure I had the right business plan and my ribbon-cutting event was in October 2017. I started off with just massage calling my business Balance Mobile Massage.
Then we evolved to an On-Demand Mobile Spa Business where we provided massages, facials, body treatments, and nails. Balance now works with Savannah Film, Hotels, B&B’s, residential homes, corporate offices, and corporate offices. I’m so proud of how this business took off and I’m excited for future things to come.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
To be honest no, there have been challenges along the way. I have always worked hard, kept a positive attitude, and been a go-getter. That is what I look for with my team and that has been a challenge like many businesses out there. The pandemic was another challenge as well, we had a close for a couple of months last year. Balance was short-staffed for a while, and I really had to step up to make sure clients got their services.
I always checked in with everyone on my team to make sure they were safe, we had open discussions on safety. Everyone who works for me is vaccinated and follows the safety protocols I made for COVID-19. Safety is the most important thing for my team and my clients.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Balance Mobile Spa?
Since the pandemic, lots of businesses have become more mobile. We are here to help you have a fun and relaxing time. At Balance Mobile Spa we know life can get busy and stressful, that is why we ask you to gather your friends or loved ones and we will bring the spa to you. We specialize in catering to your party for massages, facials, body treatments, and nails.
We travel and service the greater Savannah, Bluffton, and Hilton Head areas. As an on-demand mobile spa company, we want to help you find your life’s balance with those you love by spending quality time and feeling relaxed. We cater to individuals, groups, events, and businesses.
We are not just in the spa business; we are in the people business. The difference with us is we provide a customer service line you can call, yes you can actually speak to one of our customer service reps. We care and want our clients to feel comfortable when booking a service or have a question. Our business is a stress-free business. We are here to help you find your balance.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Relatability, I can relate to my clients, and this adds value to my services. Another quality is we listen to what our clients are looking for and what they need. I’m empathetic, caring, and grateful every day. Everyone on the Balance Team is unique and has different qualities.
Rose Murray our massage therapist specializes in lymphatic massage. Robin Pospishil our esthetician has an amazing facial called the Lifting & Balance Facial which is referred to as a non-surgical facelift. I’ve been a massage therapist for 18 years and I love what I do.
I love networking, being a part of local events, meeting amazing people, and helping my team to be successful. I believe that is the key to success.
