Hidden Gems: Meet Mike Fox of Beaufort Lands End Paddling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Fox.

Hi Mike, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started working as a part-time kayak guide when working as a teacher in Beaufort, North Carolina.
I moved to SC and continued guiding, now in the low country.
I purchased my business about six years ago.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The best part of my business is getting people on the water and sharing the low country with them.
The hardest part for me is the business end – which is why I have a bookkeeper and an accountant!

As you know, we’re big fans of Beaufort Lands End Paddling. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We offer kayak tours, stand up paddle board lessons, as well as rentals.
We offer tours in five different locations – Beaufort (SC), Port Royal, Hunting Island St Park, St. Helena, and the ACE Basin.
We’re a completely mobile business so we meet you at a specific location to launch the kayaks.

We offer three tours that currently no other local kayak business offers – a Hunting Island Lagoon to Boneyard Beach trip, Port Royal to Parris Island, and Morgan “Monkey” Island paddle!

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Be aware of changing conditions and natural “challenges” in and on the low country waters – wind, tide, oysters and “pluff mud”!

We give paddling instruction for beginners.
Don’t forget things like sunscreen, a hat, footwear that can get wet and isn’t slippery, and water!
