Hi Nichelle, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It’s very interesting how we can find ourselves in places that weren’t originally in the plans. I was in the Air Force, working as an Air Transportation Supervisor, and was deployed overseas back-to-back. I knew that I was ready to slow down and start a family, which is impossible to do consistently being deployed. By grace, I met my husband overseas and we just knew we were meant to be.
As soon as we returned from our last deployment, I was already scheduled to spend another year overseas in a restricted location. At that point, I had to make a choice, my career in the military or potentially starting a new life with the love of my life. I chose my husband and I chose myself. I truly am grateful for my time and experience in the military but I knew. that my time and purpose had pivoted.
After our first son was born, I started working for the local city government and always have had a love for serving my community. Once COVID happened, I knew that I had to once again make a decision, my career or preserving the health of my family. Of course, I chose my family and within that time frame, we welcomed our second son into our family.
I knew that at some point I wanted to return to the workforce, but putting two babies under two in daycare was not financially in the plans for our family. We were ultimately homebound due to COVID and it was literally life or death to leave home. My virtual assistance business, Compere Consulting, started out of necessity: for myself and my family.
We talk about the sacrifices of being a mom but hardly about how it affects us mentally and emotionally. I noticed that I had given up so much of myself that I barely had anything left for me, I had lost my sense of identity and individuality and realized that I was only wearing my wife and mommy hat and that I didn’t know who I was as my own person.
I always loved helping others with their own successes. I came across a Virtual Assistance course and thought “What if this could work for me?” I could work from the safety of my home, never have to jeopardize the safety and health of my family, and all the while still making money doing what I enjoy. It was a no-brainer.
I started off designing websites, serving as an online business manager, and inventory management. As I started to hone in my specialties, I transitioned into providing long-term courses, community, and project management for female and mom entrepreneurs.
I honestly have never been more happy and content because I no longer have to choose between my career or my family or what’s best for me. Starting my virtual assistance business allows me to enjoy it all: walking in my purpose to serve, having an identity of my own, being a present wife and mom, and shining in my own light doing what I love.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been easy. Being in the military, I experienced things that forever changed my life.
Suffering from PTSD, anxiety, and depression, my hurdles have always been emotional, mental, and spiritual. Add motherhood, sprinkle a bit of PPD (postpartum depression) on top, and you can have a recipe for giving up, overwhelm, and the desire to roll up in a big ball just to simply protect yourself. At one point, I honestly did give up on myself.
I had moments where I knew daily I was fighting for my life. There were days it was difficult to get out of bed and moments when I found myself frozen. I always felt like there was me, the joyful Nichelle, and then there was the sad woman who had experienced the worst of it all battling each other daily. I chose not to identify with what I experienced and got the help I needed.
I shared my story and built a support system I could lean on. It allowed me the opportunity to tap into the essence of who I was meant to be, and I find grace by pouring into others because you welcome peace when you provide peace.
I constantly remind myself, and anyone I meet, that we are not our circumstances. We are not what we have been through. We have the POWER to PAINT the future we want to see. If you are struggling internally, find grace externally.
