Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole.
Hi Nicole , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been drawn to helping others. I started my career in nursing as a Staff RN at St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital in Med-Surg which led to working in the “float pool” where I would be staffed on a variety of units throughout the hospitals. In 2018, I added in a part-time job of working as a Clinical Instructor at Georgia Southern University. I discovered a deepening love for teaching and mental health as I found myself instructing students at different mental health facilities around Savannah. This led to pursuing a graduate degree as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. With clinical experience in a variety of settings I found that I truly enjoyed working with clients in an outpatient practice. I have now been working as a PMHNP for 3 years. After 2 years working with a company, I decided to open my own practice, and here we are today! 9 months as a business owner and provider at Mindful Mental Health and Well-Being, LLC.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road is very rarely, if ever smooth for most of us. I believe it is in the struggles where we can find ourselves and our greatest strengths, as well as be humbled and realize our limits. So, to answer the question directly, no, the road has not been smooth but it has built character, a deeper self-trust and resilience. Some of my personal struggles have been going back to school full-time while working as a nurse, clinical instructor, single mother and experiencing a pandemic all at the same time was quite challenging. The realization that work-life balance is of the utmost importance. Then taking a huge risk of starting my own practice with so many unknowns.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
This practice provides mental health services to individuals age 18 and older. These services include psychotropic medication management, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, as well as a holistic approach and individualized plan of care. Not all clients need, want or require medications to manage their symptoms but there can be great benefits to exploring that option in conjunction with lifestyle and behavior modifications. At this practice all clients get the time and attention they deserve while working with the provider to create a plan that works best for them to meet their goals. Also, working closely with others in the healthcare field (therapists, dieticians, primary care, acupuncturists, hypnotists, hospitals, etc.) in Savannah and surrounding communities helps to provide additional resources and the best care possible.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I think what has worked best for me is just being open, having honest conversations, asking for help or advice, especially from those who have already walked a similar path. It is also important to have a presence in your community and engage with others even it is outside of your specialty.
