Today we’d like to introduce you to Vince Spinnato.
Hi Vince, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was 10 years old, watching “Dynasty” and “The Young and the Restless” with my Grandma Serra, I set my sights on developing skincare products to help people look and feel beautiful.
I stayed on that path through my grammar school days when I mixed essential oils in small vials I bought at the dime store; to high school when I designed a fragrance bottle that I still use today; to Beverly Hills where I finagled my way into top salons to learn the trade. Currently, I’m the CEO/founder of TurnKey Beauty, Inc., VS Vincenzo Ltd., and Vincenzo Skincare LLC and develop new private-label and white-label product lines for hundreds of cosmetic, treatment, and healthcare companies, as well as for scores of celebrities, retailers, and entrepreneurs.
I’ve been deeply and personally invested in creating the unisex fine fragrance for Judy Garland. It’s been a challenge to develop a product for someone who has passed, but for the Judy fragrance I have been able to work closely with Ms. Garland’s children, Lorna, Liza, and Joey to learn personal details of her life – scents she liked, her likes and dislikes, the foods she enjoyed and so much more.
I hold Ms. Garland’s legacy to the utmost importance, honor, and respect. The JUDY fragrance resembles and personifies Ms. Garland in every way. It’s delicate yet strong, elegant, and timeless – all with a modern twist.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I’m severely dyslexic and college-level academics were grueling.
It wasn’t long before I realized that I was on the wrong path if I wanted to own my own skincare company one day. What I needed was a hands-on experience. When I was 20, I left college, hopped in my car, and headed West for good. I was determined not to give up until I reached the Pacific Ocean, where, incidentally, I spent my first night on the beach.
Being in the beauty business, I always felt that my trichotillomania (a hair-pulling disorder) was an obstacle because it eroded my self-confidence when I tried to get into the industry that judges you on how you look. I always felt “less than” in their presence. I’m still working on that.
Industry-wise, the biggest obstacle was my lack of contacts in a world that depends on “who you know” even more than what you know. It took years to develop the mentors that helped me along the way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I’ve amassed a group of cosmetic/personal care chemists and perfumers that are available to work on a variety of personal care programs and projects.
We appeal to personalized clients such as doctors, celebrities, salons/SPA owners, and manufacturers who like to supplement or outsource their product development and manufacturing efforts, or would like to use our consumer trends and competitive round-up information.
Raw material suppliers looking for in-depth formulation expertise in difficult categories, or would like to scope out the breadth of new material applications. https:/turnkeybeauty.net.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Yes. I actually sourced out a mentor before I even arrived in California.
She was a TV “kitchen cosmetologist” who developed products out of natural ingredients. I worked for her for two years for free — not that I recommend that — but it worked until I found myself in the woods financially. I don’t think I could survive without her guidance.
My next mentor was Maria Ardita, a “principal scientist” who was known for creating formulas that are still used today in the industry. She was part owner of a manufacturing plant and she introduced me to the art of formulating my own beauty products.
She remains one of my closest friends/mentors and I am forever indebted to her.
