Inspiring Conversations with Jacob Boswell of Boswell Events

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Boswell.

Jacob, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
To start off my name is Jacob Boswell and I own Boswell Events. We actually started as a small DJ company mostly providing services for small backyard parties and bars and restaurants. I got my start in this business as I was working in a club as a bouncer. At that time, we had a resident DJ at the club, one night as we were getting ready to open the DJ come down from his DJ Booth in a panic. He couldn’t get his computer working. A coworker mentioned I was the resident computer guy and maybe I could help him. After a few minutes of trouble shooting I had him up and running. Later on, the owner of the club comes to me and tells me I am no longer a bouncer I now work with the DJ. That was in the Summer of 2011. I had no clue what I was doing but went to work. Since that time, we have grown our business into an actual event business. Offering much more than the simple DJ Services of those times. The reason I really like this job is I love working and helping people. I began my people career in the pawnshop business when I was 18 years old. I also in those years started volunteering with our local fire department. I had a good career as both a volunteer and paid firefighter and I learned a lot about dealing with people. At that time, I was dealing with people in some of the worst moments of their lives. Now I work with them in some of their happiest moments.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would not say it has been smooth, but it has definitely been interesting. Covid really hurt us for a while and has taken a long time to recover but I feel we are on the right track. It has been a learning curve over the years with learning how to price especially as we add services. I feel like in this business you are always learning music and wedding trends change at a very fast pace, so you have to work very hard to keep up. I am also married now with a 1-year-old and another baby on the way. With that I am really having to learn how to manage my time with both my family and my business. I don’t believe that I would call it a struggle but definitely a change.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are Boswell Events. We are not your run of the mill DJ company. We are truly an event service. Offering DJ Services, Day of Coordinator Services, and recently have launched our event clean up service where we come in after for example a wedding and clean up all the trash, pack up all the tables help the organizers make sure decorations are packed away and ready to be cleared from the venue. We have many other addons to our services from things such as the audio guestbook to uplighting. What sets us apart from others is that we are not just there to make a paycheck. We do this job because we love our clients, we love being involved in the special memories. One of the things I love is when I go back and see my past clients and I see they are having babies or completing college degrees, I love to see people successful, and I feel like I am able to help make dreams come true. We celebrate not just the victories but the losses, my goal is for my clients to be able to call us family.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I wish I would have started this business when I was much younger. Don’t be afraid to take chances. Every company has something to offer find what works for you and reach out and network with other businesses in your area. We don’t use the word competition in my business we are friends, coworkers and associates with other event businesses. One final piece of advice that I feel is most important never stop learning.
