Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle Nelems.
Hi Janelle, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After nearly 30 years as a qualitative researcher, I began investing, renovating, and flipping rental properties. In 2018, I took an unhealthy passion for pillows, decor, and design and turned her passion into a profession. My daughter-in-law (the “K” in JKN) started in my garage, then as we grew moved to storage, then a warehouse, then a larger space, and now have a 5,500 sq. ft. warehouse to house our inventory.
Staging and selling my own properties proved successful, so I applied the same techniques for other properties. Given my background, it seemed natural that I focus on the psychology of staging – subtle cues that make a difference to the target market. We create an audience persona and understand what will appeal to that demographic.
JKN is data-driven and strives to create an emotional connection with potential buyers. We quickly began staging properties for builders and owners looking to sell their homes.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting your own business is never smooth, and anyone who tells you it is daring, I say, wouldn’t be telling the truth. A few struggles along the way have been growing pains. We started and took off almost immediately, sort of like drinking from a fire hose.
There are worse problems to have, but oftentimes, you feel like a rat on a treadmill. That’s not always a good thing when you are trying to determine the best processes to put in place. Given the demand, we have also found it challenging to find the right people. Kendyll became a full-time mother, a role she was born to play, and fortunately my daughter, Madison joined.
Kendyll was an extremely talented designer, and Madison is extremely organized and structured. She is truly the backbone of the company as the COO. We also have a wonderful staff of designers and movers.
We’ve been impressed with JKN Home Staging and Design, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We stage homes for builders, investors flipping and homeowners who are selling their property. JKN strives to make an emotional connection with potential buyers and creates a “wow” factor in each home we touch.
We are an authentic group of women who simply want to get homes sold for our clients. Our average price point is $800K-2M, and almost all have received an offer within the first week.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
That I had nearly 30 years as a professional moderator.
