Today we’d like to introduce you to Jowand Brown.
Hi Jowand, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I started cutting hair when I was 14 years old at Holmes Barbershop on the west side of Savannah, GA.
My mother and I stayed down the street on West 54th street in Madison Apartments. She used to walk me to the barbershop for haircuts. One day I asked the guy who was cutting my hair can I become a sweep boy to make extra money to help with school and help my mom pay for my haircut even though the guys always cut my hair for free.
That helped out a lot! Sometime after that, I started watching more and took the love for cutting hair. It was cool to see how you can change a person’s looks in a few minutes with a pair of clippers.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it wasn’t a smooth road for me because my mother was a single parent.
In high school, I played football and I worked to help out around the house. After a while, Mr. Holmes the owner of Holmes Barbershop asked if I wanted to participate in an apprenticeship program so I can take my career more seriously. Schoolwork, football practice, and football studying for barbering got pretty stressful at a young age which resulted in me failing the apprenticeship program.
Therefore, I went to Savannah tech to take up the barbering program where I became a master barber.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The name of my business is Fly Talk Barber Studio. I named my barbershop Fly Talk because I wanted a name that would grab your attention. Fly Talk is that positive talk that’s going around town about my shop.
People are going to speak good things and have amazing experiences. I always pictured having a full-service barbershop for my clients to include hair shampoo, facials, color services, men’s hair replacement, etc. I also love cutting kids’ hair.
Fly Talk Barber Studios. So now, I have my own business at the sola salons. In Savannah, GA.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yes, Covid-19 was new to me. Never experienced anything like It before. The most important lesson, I learned was how fast life can change. I thank God for keeping me healthy and keeping me safe once we were able to return to work.
