Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Ross.
Hi Joy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Graduated from Marywood university In Pennsylvania with business and fashion degree
Moved to Hilton Head
Had a wholesale clothing business for 10 years. Recession in the early 80’s closed a lot of stores
Met someone in the hair industry. I always wanted to do hair but my parents wanted me to go to college.
After divorce and 1 year old daughter I decided to go back to cosmetology school
I’m was 29 so I knew what I wanted to do.
Through the years I have worked doing hair and hair and makeup for wedding and tv commercials. I have done thousands of wedding parties hair along with.several tv commercials and magazines. Chris EVERET for her tennis video discovery channel golf magazine and local publications.
I moved to Bluffton in 2006 and opened my boutique salon in the heart of old town Bluffton. It was like a breath of fresh air after being on Hilton Head for 20 years.
I continued to do event hair and makeup and worked in my salon. Style it salon.
After 20 years there it became difficult to find parking for my clients and festivals and markets made it hard to continue there.
I moved the salon into my townhouse 2 years ago and went back to school to be a licensed hair loss specialist.
I have the best devices and products to help people with hair loss and continue doing people with hair. It has been so rewarding.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Always struggles I mentioned parking in old town Bluffton that was an issue.
Covid was huge. I had to close for a couple months then a lot of my clients decided to go grey or color their own hair. Luckily others moved here and my google rankings brought new clients
Finding help is always an issue. There aren’t any beauty schools nearby so there isn’t a lot of new stylists.
There is a lot of drama in this business. Many stylists open up a salon together and then they don’t get along so some leave and open their own then a few more leave and open their own. Before you know it they all have their own salon and no one has help.
In other towns there are more hair stylists than salons so the owners can be selective in choosing and training their stylist before they just begin doing hair. There is apprentice for a year before having their own clients. Here that doesn’t work because everyone needs to fill the chair overhead is very high. So things are compromised and unfortunately the client suffers.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I mentioned a lot of this already. I think the fact that I am always trying to stay educated in all of the newest trends and products. I teach my client how to style their hair easily and quickly. I write a hair article in the local newspaper for 20 years that people actually bring in when they come for their appointment. I’m experienced. This business is more difficult than it looks. Hair is a complex business. Chemicals are used. Things could and do go awry. That’s when experience comes in. Correcting a bad cut or color takes skill. I’ve seen so many bad cuts and colors.
This new venture of being a hair loss specialist is more important and even though I’ve done hair for 40 years I realize how complicated the hair is and how many different things it depends on to stay healthy and look great.
I am now really trying to let people know that there are a lot of useless quick fixes out there for hair loss. Many have side effects and only work when they are using it and reverts back when it is discontinued.
The device I purchased has been the most effective and no prolonged use. No pain and 96% successful.
The biggest problem I have is letting people know about it. Social media is the biggest influence and I don’t want to be doing that I want to do hair.
There are other places that charge more than me for less but it’s getting harder to be in the forefront of people all the time.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I am always researching products and techniques, the who, what, when , where and why of everything. I try to explain it in terms that my clients can understand. Google is my source of information along with making sure the information is practical for this area. The population here is different from elsewhere. A lot of People are retired and primped for their work life. Now they want to look good but no effort. It’s challenging
