Inspiring Conversations with Leroy Brown III of Gifted Hands Salon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leroy Brown III.

Hi Leroy , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Like most, life took a pivotal turn pre and post Covid for me. After losing my job as commercial truck driver in 2020, my wife suggested that I pursue my passion, the art of cutting hair. I truly love transforming people, building their confidence as well as establishing relationships.

I enrolled at Empire Beauty School July of 2020 and completed the program in April of 2021. Graduated as Empire’s 2021 student of the year and with honors. All while building my brand delivering mobile services to clients. After completion I was licensed and certified as a licensed master cosmetologist in June of 2021.

After passing state board I went on to pursue my career as a stylist at Super Cuts. Stayed there for a total of five months before I joined an amazing team of individuals where I learned so much from. Which included the mastery of clipper cutting to knowing how to run an effective and profitable business. All while honing other talents that I discovered. I operated with that team for almost two years until the youngest of the two owners decided to expand to downtown Broughton Street of Savannah. Being there allowed me to display my talents on broader platform. The owner granted me the opportunity to operate initially as Operations Manager and later, Shop Manager of The Gold Tribe Barbering Lounge. I learned so much as a leader, an artist and the importance building and maintaining a reputable business within the community. We were able to meet people from all over the world, politicians, celebrities and build relationships with pillars in the community like SCAD.

After a successful run, I decided to branch off and focus on my personal brand, Gifted Hands Hair Salon. I wasn’t for the name initially but, it’s what my clients referenced me to. So, I stayed with it. Now, I run a successful business from my studio suite at Sola Salons. Here, I focus on the client and I listen with the intention to understand and not to reply. Over the course of years I’ve learned that people want to be heard. They want a space where there’s peace because life’s challenging. Also to have someone that they can trust to prepare them for any situation in life. Whether it be for their wedding, careers, career changes, life altering situations or to just simply make them feel good. My clients love it. I can control the atmosphere and welcome them with a smile, deliver great customer service and be respectful of their time so they can tackle the day.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not. You know, I didn’t expect it to be. That idea wasn’t even considered for this journey to be smooth. I told my wife that I’m chosen for the accelerated path in life and since she’s married to me that she’s now on it also. Meaning, what obstacles most may/may not hit in life, we’re going to run into them much quicker and the objective is to conquer them in a timely manner. I believe that’s so because of the calling on my life.

We’ve encountered at one point her stepping up as the leading spouse and myself falling into the role of a supporting spouse. We also had a difficult time conceiving. But last year, we were blessed with a handsome, smart and funny baby boy. Who’s now a year old.

Along with financial strain, losing grand parents, to me almost losing my mother earlier this year to losing my father here recently. Just a few obstacles. Only to learn that opposition built posture for us.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The mission for my salon is simple. To deliver quality service, for everyone not just the first time but, every time. I specialize in clipper cutting and trendy styles. The most rewarding response I can receive from a client is, “Do whatever you want”. It allows me to express my creativity freely. I’m known for my consistency, great conversation, my energy and the ability to make to people feel good. You come to my studio and I guarantee you’re going to laugh!

What sets me apart is my passion for what I do. Fueled by discipline and consistency. Also, I’m versatile. Not only am I handy with the clippers, I also pick up the flat irons too! I pride myself on being a student of the craft. I’m always learning and soaking up as much information as possible.

What I’m most proud of is that I found the vehicle that’s allowed me to change the trajectory of my lineage and that it will be built to impact everyone that not only falls under it but those who aren’t.

I say all this to say, if you’re looking for a barber stylist who can deliver great service like Chic Fil A, I’m your guy!

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Everything in life’s a risk. Whether big or small, it’s still a risk. I believe the bigger the risk, the greater the reward. It may make you feel uneasy initially. Emotions can be controlled. Do it scared if you must and just believe you can do it! Remove the E from emotion and just get in motion! It’ll all work out and most times better than you imagined.
