Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Hasan.

Hi Amber, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Hi, my name is Amber Unique Hasan and I am the “UNIQUE” in Unique’s Sugar Bistro.

I am a Beatrice, Alabama-born and raised self-taught baker and US Army Veteran. I specialize in custom buttercream cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and more. As a child, my late aunt, Luvern taught me my way around the kitchen. She wasn’t a baker but she was an amazing cook. From that point on, I enjoyed cooking for my family and friends.

Cheesecake. That is what started it all. Cheesecake has always been one of my favorite desserts. One day, I saw a video on how to make them and I was like that seems so easy. Let me try. It came out amazing! I made them for friends and they went on to convince me to start selling them to others within our community.

I then reached out to my aunt Martha who walked me through baking my famous old-fashioned pound cake. All of my customers loved it. Seeing the support I received from my community pushed me to learn and perfect my craft. Each time I tried something new, received positive feedback and went looking for my next sweet masterpiece to make. Now, here I am, not even a year later. I am amazed at the amount of support I’ve received.

My goal is to open my very own bakery one day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In no way has this been easy. Everything has taken time and effort. I just have to remember that any progress is great. No matter how little it may be. One of my struggles has been staying confident in my craft. I sometimes get intimidated or think my work isn’t good enough. I’ve now learned that all I can do is stay headstrong and motivated.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a self-taught baker who specializes in buttercream cakes, southern desserts(southern red velvet, pound cakes, pies, banana pudding, and etc.), and treat table desserts(chocolate dipped items and more).

I am well known for my banana pudding. I’ve recently learned that people call me “The Banana Pudding Lady”, no kidding!

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I’ve always loved the kitchen. I am a huge foodie. I find comfort in cooking and feeding loved ones.

As I said before, growing up my great aunt taught me the ways around the kitchen. I can’t forget about my Grandma Diane though. I spent every Thanksgiving break at her home learning the secret ingredients to making the amazing southern-style dinner that she made for the family every year.

I watched her every move and saw how passionate she was about her food. I then told myself that everything I ever cooked or baked with be made with the same passion and love that my grandma had.
