Life & Work with Brian Walters of Alpharetta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Walters.

Hi Brian, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my Hairdressing Career in Dallas Tx with Toni&Guy. They were the highest level of quality I had ever seen. I went through a lengthy apprenticeship and soon was training to teach on a basic and advanced level. I then switched to a more Management Leadership role with my education.
I had great opportunities to travel around the US and internationally sharing advanced hair color techniques. But my goal to become a business owner was achieved at my 10 year mark in the Industry.
After helping Toni & Guy expand in other territories, my opportunity came in 2000 when I became a partner and opened our first salon in Georgia.
We expanded to four salons and had over 100 employees. I was doing so much admin that I moved away from what I loved which was being in the salon doing hair and working one on one with my team. I de franchised and relocated to my current space and love the quality of my team and the loyalty of our clients an staff some of which have been with us since the early 2000s

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There were so many times when my business should have failed.
I separated from my business partner of 20 years which was as close to a divorce as i’ve ever experienced. Keeping the peace and being patient for the years during that period was one of the toughest emotionally stressful times.
I had to self finance finish out on my current location, with hard money loans.that had a daily payback that was brutal. To make sure my staff always had their paycheck meant everything and there was so much juggling with money going on, often times moving personal credit into the bussiness to keep things a float.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love Hairdressers, being a part of a team of extremely talented creatives really matters to me.
I specialize in color service’s, which means i do not cut hair at all.
I have focused on that since 1990, I work with my wife Ashley who specializes as well with hair cuts.
Specializing allows us to train younger staff with a wealth of knowledge that we can pour into them.
My team is crazy talented, with individuals that have taught, traveled Internationally and won photographic competitions. this allows our salon to showcase our work, without having to use other businesses images. We do Photo shoots regularly. which allows us to curate our branding.
We have Sunday evenings dedicated to ongoing education activities. This keeps our quality at high level

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I was born in Los Angeles, watching all of the creative and colorful individuals of the 70’s and 80’s
left a huge impression on me. The images of culture, personal style, music and people fallowing there passion is something that’s a part of me and always will be
