Today we’d like to introduce you to Dante Flowers.
Hi Dante, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started playing drums at a local church around the age of 6 years old. Later, the church was in need of an organist/keyboardist so I decided to teach myself the Hammond B3 organ at the age of 13. From there, I participated in the high school jazz band under the direction of Charles Todd, who had a major influence on the music career. After high school, I decided to attend Valdosta State University and pursue a Bachelors in Music Performance with an emphasis in jazz piano. During that time, I had the pleasure of studying piano with David Springfield, who was my primary instructor, and many other educators. After graduating, I decided to really explore the music scene and had the opportunity of performing with many great musicians, do studio work, score plays, etc. Just to have a backup plan, I made the decision to go back to Valdosta State and pursue a Music Education degree; I never really wanted to teach; however, I was offered an opportunity to teach, so I taught 3 years in the public school system and then opened up my own music academy. During those 3 years, a love for teaching grew, I learned how to teach, manage, and most importantly communicate. Looking back on my journey, I see that every event in my life was a stepping stone to get to my purpose on the planet; to teach music, give people the opportunities to express themselves through music, and share my love and appreciation for music.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely wasn’t a smooth journey. Starting out, teaching myself with very little resources and not being exposed to a wide range of music made things very difficult. Back then, there wasn’t youtube nor social media. By learning music by ear made the transition of learning music theory, understanding music, and reading music a struggle. of course, dealing with the business of music and compensation. just to name a few
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I run a music academy (Music Central Performance Academy) where we teach different instrument as well as different genres of music. I specialize in piano/music theory; I love analyzing music, breaking it down so my clients and understand and perform. I also compose, arrange, and very active performer. I’d say I’m known for my perform on piano and my knowledge of music. I’m most proud of having a place for people to come to learn, appreciate, and enjoy music. I believe having the ability to teach different learning styles to accommodate clients and still be an active musician, traveling, and performing sets me apart from others. Many people teach for someone to just perform; I teach for understanding.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Listening to good music and watching my clients perform during recitals. It’s always a joy to see the progress in all of my students. Outside of music, cooking, workout, and learning history brings my happiness.
