Today we’d like to introduce you to Darian Marbley
Hi Darian, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always been an artistic and creative person growing up. I grew up drawing, painting, crocheting, sewing…any form of art you can imagine i’ve tried it. But once I picked up that camera, I knew I found my calling! It started as a fun little hobby, joining my mom as she took pictures for her college photography class. Eventually in high school that Canon T3i became mine and my passion took off. After photography my passion emerged into film! Deciding to go to college under film, but about halfway through college I decided to move from my home Little Rock, Arkansas all the way to Statesboro, Georgia! Finishing my degree at Georgia Southern. It was the best choice i’ve ever made in my life. I met life long friends and was reunited with my intense love of photography! Savannah is too beautiful not to walk around and capture!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road was definitely bumpy, especially taking on the journey of moving from Arkansas to Georgia at the age of 20. Leaving all what I know and who I know to new beginnings. There were definitely a lot of struggles when it comes to adapting and finding my new self. It was a new phase of my life and I had to get use to my new surroundings. But in the end it was completely worth it! I found a career, love, family, friends and a community!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As of now, I am 8 months post graduation. My degree specializes in multimedia film and production and I was blessed enough to get a job as a news photographer! I absolutely love my job, of course every job has its ups and downs but i wake up everyday excited to see what’s next. Outside of work I enjoy traveling around Georgia and taking pictures of the beautiful architecture! The history of Savannah specifically is unmatched. As of film, documentaries were my specialty. I love people, their stories, their lives! I just love hearing other people’s perspective, what they like/dislike. Documentary gave me that opportunity to talk with people and document their stories for others to hear! I’ve made quite a few short docs that i’m very proud of and hope to make more in the future. My 2 and a half years at Georgia Southern gave me so much pride as I feel like i truly found myself there. Working with the professors and showing my hard work ethic, it definitely gave me so many opportunities to learn and perfect my craft. To this day I still take pride on being extremely hard working and dedicated. If i’m not good at something I will take time to learn and improve! Recently I have started doing pop up shops to sell my prints, but haven’t had much luck finding good events to join. Luckily at my first event I ended up selling 3 of my largest prints! Hopefully I’ll have more luck with it!
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory would have to be in 3rd grade at my elementary school. I went to an arts school, which only ignited my passion even more, and in the 3rd grade my favorite art teacher put together a small group of us to paint a mural! Only being around 7-8 years old I was ecstatic! Staying late after school for a few hours or spending extra time there it created great memories. We ended up painting a huge mural that was put into the museum, they showcased it one night and it was a big event, it even got us posted in the news paper! Now that was a great memory.
