Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily and Brian Kellett.
Hi Emily and Brian, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Our first location opened in September of 2015 in Italian Village – Columbus, Ohio.
Six years later, STUMP has proven that prioritizing one-on-one customer service and plant education for our guests in the shops works to help support our greater community of plant owners as they gain the confidence to care for their plant collections.
We are often asked how we ended up with multiple locations in different cities—the answer is simple: our locations are much smaller than the typical garden center, each between 550-1,250 square feet.
The result shifts from a single location garden center with many employees and large amounts of inventory to a model that gives us the flexibility to reach a broader audience of enthusiastic plant lovers of all ages and backgrounds… and to be honest, each location presented itself rather than being a function of a business plan.
In each of these communities, we sincerely love building people’s confidence to bring nature into their homes & lifestyles—many of who buy their first plants from us.
Emily has always said our goal was to help every person learn how to have a plant in their home. We believe that we should all have plants in our homes as we have personally benefitted from all that they offer as air purifiers and decorative elements, and in some way, they can become close friends.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
A STUMP, we take pride in our work to select the highest quality tropical & desert plants (cacti, ficus, dracaenas, succulents, air plants, & many other houseplant varieties) and sustainably crafted wares, from the classic terra-cotta to our custom, artist-made planters.
From the beginning, STUMP aims to support independent artists and local manufacturers. Over 99% of our wares are made by ceramic artists in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, New York, Massachusetts, California, North Carolina, Wisconsin, or in Roseville, Ohio by a manufacturer we visit regularly and interact with daily.
We strive to only sell planters that will be worth keeping for many years to come, even as the plants they hold grow and are transplanted into larger planters.
In the shop, we have a complimentary repotting service and love to help you curate the perfect combination. With every plant purchase, our team will offer you a care card to go with your plant.
We also host monthly workshops– cactus & succulent arrangements, mounting plants, terrariums, repotting, just to name a few–and frequently partner with other local businesses & creatives for in-store pop-ups, yoga, and our Artist Shelf Takeover Series. Anyone can host a private event, or rent our space!
What were you like growing up?
Emily majored in Industrial Design – which she uses still today in designing new products for the shops & maintaining our buying guidelines.
Brian majored in still-based media studies (photography) and later completed his MFA at Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, CA. His background has come in handy as they both do the majority of photography and design work for the company.
Both graduated from the Columbus College of Art & Design in Columbus, OH. They are also the sole owners of the company.
