Life & Work with Emma Aimée of Downtown Savannah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Aimée.

Hi Emma, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Both my mom and grandma have always been super creative, so I’m one hundred percent certain I got my creativity from them! Growing up I have a ton of memories with my sister painting the rocks in our backyard, coloring with chalk all over the driveway and hanging out in our little art closet under the stairs. Art was how I spent my time and more importantly how I spent it with others, so it quickly became something I wanted to have in my life forever. In 2018, instead of going to my feeder high school in Dallas, I auditioned for Booker T Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts downtown, where I specialized in drawing and painting. When I got to SCAD I continued my love for fine arts and majored in painting. It wasn’t until the beginning of this year that I realized most of my paintings were replicas of my photos and sometimes I would enjoy the photo behind the piece even more. My path became very clear to me and I changed my major instantly! I’ve been a photography major ever since and will be graduating next year with a BFA, majoring in photography and minoring in Painting and Fashion Photography.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Since photography was always something I did either as a hobby or a profession, the road to get here has been more enjoyable than anything. I feel so inspired by not only my peers but the world as a whole. Anywhere I go, anyone I meet, and anything I do, my eye finds something it wants to capture. I still face technical challenges but they are challenges that excite me to learn more and keep me curious in my field. They push me and make me better!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I mainly shoot documentary photography with a recent interest in fashion photography. The idea of storytelling through my photos has always inspired me to continue creating. I love to travel and use my camera to capture the connection between people, places or things. I think the sweetest thing life offers is human connection, therefore I strive to document that beauty of life through my lens.

How do you think about happiness?
A lot of things make me happy, like thunderstorms, dogs, handwritten letters, and a good pair of denim jeans. My list could go on forever, but there are three that really make my heart feel whole. First would be quality time with the people I love. Nothing is better than curling up on the couch with my mom and sister for a movie night or having dinner and laughing with friends. Second is self-growth, I’m always looking for ways to challenge myself and learn more about who I am. I don’t think you can ever really stop growing or improving. And lastly, travel. I touched on this earlier, but it really does change the way I see the world. Every new experience expands my perspective and reminds me how big, and small, life is.
