Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Creech.
Hi Heather, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
If we throw it way back I started in the horticulture industry as a single teen mom. I desperately needed to provide for my daughter and found a local nursery hiring. With no plant experience, I had little hope of getting hired but I got an introduction position and 10 years later moved into sales with the same company.
From there I managed a large account for another nursery, managed an up-and-coming nursery, and then decided maybe I’d like to try something different. I worked for a corporate fortune 500 company for a few years through covid. Cubicle work made me miss the company of nature to such a large extent I decided to branch out on my own.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No! The landscape industry is male-dominated. Competing against the opposite sex while having the same or better qualifications has been a constant struggle. Aside from that struggle I’ve been raising a family since my teen years. Nothing has been easy but it’s all been worth it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in seasonal color installation, private gardening, and container gardening. Introduction to self-employment wasn’t easy but knowing people in the industry and having them experience my work ethic and commitment to horticulture helped solidify work for me.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Mind pump. It’s really a fitness podcast but it constantly reminds me to hush that voice that says I can’t and listen to the voice that knows I can, and I will.
