Life & Work with Kara Coy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Coy.

Hi Kara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always wanted to help people and make people feel good. My mom is a nurse and I wanted to follow in her footsteps. After I started exploring what nursing school would be like I quickly learned that was not my path. I always loved doing hair and makeup, and after I left college my family encouraged me to go to cosmetology school. I attended Empire Beauty school and graduated in 2014. After working in a franchise salon for about six months and a local salon for three years, I found a group of stylists that help shape me into the stylist I am today. I worked at Roots southern salon, and Susan, Luke, and all of the amazing stylists helped me grow more than I could ever imagine. I became a Redkin specialist, hair-tied extensions specialist, and a Blonding specialist.

After three wonderful years at Roots, I decided to branch out on my own and open a Sola Suite and it has been life-changing. I always dreamed of owning my own business, and with the support of my husband and family, my dreams have come true! As a mother to a spunky four years old boy and a beautiful one-year-old girl, I have truly found my passion in helping other mothers feel beautiful. I love all of my clients, but there is something so special as a mom leaving my chair and seeing her glow. All women deserve to feel beautiful and special, and if I can bless someone with that feeling I have done my job.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would like to say me coming to the level I am now has been easy, but that would be a lie. I have struggled in a toxic salon environment and it made me almost give up on my dream. Once I found a group of women that actually supported my vision and encouraged me I truly felt like I was becoming the stylist I should be. Having children in this industry can also be very hard.

What do you do when you have a client processing, pumping in the break room for your baby, and you get a call from the daycare that your toddler has a fever?! Being pulled in all different directions along with fellow stylists that don’t help, constantly talk about the other stylist negatively, and are your biggest critics can be overwhelming. The best thing any young stylist can do is to find a support group! The “cool salon” isn’t always the best business decision!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a self-proclaimed Bob Specialist, and I have also received certificates in becoming a Redkin Specialist, Handtied extensions specialist, and Redkin Blonding specialist.

I think being relatable to other moms, I can easily tell my clients what is normal for hair during postpartum, I can tell them easy styling tips, and suggest comfortable and stylish cuts along with easy-to-maintain color options.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I’m very active on social media! I have made social media a top priority for my business.

Posting my client’s before and after pictures, I constantly get messages from other stylists asking about my formulas, and future clients booking their appointments! Get social with me on Instagram and Facebook at @hairbykaracoy.
