Life & Work with Kevin Bongang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Bongang. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Artist Kevin Bongang is a man of many talents and few words, rather choosing to allow his art to speak for itself. Born in Cameroon, West Africa and raised in Savannah, Georgia. Bongang majored in Illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). He acquired his B.F.A. and M.F.A. (Illustration) in 2009 and 2013, respectively. There, he was able to hone in on his signature style awash in bold fun colors, swirling lines and whimsical imagery. The result is organic, functional, cohesive pieces of art and informed or inspired by the communities around them.

These days you can find him painting murals, creating graphics for commercial brands and engaging in his local community that he lives in Brunswick, GA adding color to the city one wall at a time. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Britney, who also serves as his art representative.

His portfolio includes clients such as Jamba Juice, Adobe, Country Music Association, Marriott International Hotels, Spanx, TPA Group, Time Equities, Inc and Mellow Mushroom.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road and pursuit to be fully true to my art has not always been the most smooth road. As an artist who works organically, it is sometimes hard to convince a new client to agree to and approach of full creative freedom. A lot of times after a discussion of the creative process, there is an understanding and trust that is developed. The result is a mural and piece of art which is organic, colorful and spreading a positive message of Happiness and Unity.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Muralist and Illustrator first, but I overall just enjoy being creative. The majority of my work comes from doing murals, and other part is digital. I enjoy doing both, but there is a joy and immense sense of freedom working outside on walls and meeting and learning about different communities from the people I meet in these places.

One of the projects or installations I am most proud of would be my most recent mural in Savannah, Ga. We were recently commissioned by Mellow Mushroom located in downtown Savannah. Easily the longest mural install for me to date. It is a full wrap around mural activating the whole restaurant in hopes to create a space where family and friends can create lifetime memories and friends alike. I grew up in Savannah and went to Savannah Arts Academy which is not far from this murals location. It was there I started to take art seriously, so this mural is very dear to me. Two of my loves together, Savannah and Pizza. Be sure to go check it out and grab a slice at 11 W Liberty St, Savannah, GA 31401

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Murals are starting to appear everywhere and in cities, they may have not been welcomed not even that long ago. The world is ever surprising and art gives one life. Murals are engaging, encouraging and can uplift in times of change. We need them everywhere, it’s the communities voice! It can only go up from here.
