Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Myers.
Hi Kimberly, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My plan from day 1 was to go to NYC. I moved there at 19, not knowing anyone. I worked my way into the high-end fashion industry, assisted Vogue editors, designed store windows at night, shot pictures of my model friends, was one of the OG’s for MAC Cosmetics – hired all the drag queens, designed makeup. I ended up having a stellar career as a fashion photographer and got to travel the world and meet and work with incredible people. I dabbled in luxury PR, and basically lived my best life! When Covid hit it was a game changer. I still love to shoot but have moved on to personal work and am currently preparing for a solo show of new work in Amsterdam and San Francisco. I moved to Savannah, which is divine! And work for the Savannah College of Art and Design producing creative content. Perfect job for me because I like to live content! I’ve recently moved to a house from the 1800’s right near Forsyth Park and have begun hosting “artist salon parties” bringing together all sorts of people from this intriguing and endlessly deep well of talent in this town. Never a dull moment! I go everywhere and although I would probably give you a historically inaccurate tour, I would give you the most fun stylish one. My new work is all being done in and around Savannah.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has NOT been an easy path. There were times when I have barely gotten by, and times when I had to pinch myself at how much I was making or where I was sitting. The lows could be low, but the highs are so much higher. You can’t get anywhere without some risk, some blind – Some may reckless, but I say fearless belief in yourself. Creating is such an Adrenalin kick, and that feeling is addictive. Covid really knocked me off course and shut down the door to go back. It was scary – but made me look ahead instead of behind me and I think I saw the Emerald City in the distance. It wasn’t immediately clear, but I gave myself over to the real riches of family and friends and having a happy and creative heart. I see beauty everywhere and appreciate even the smallest things. It planted a seed, and that seed is thriving and growing and blooming with giant flowers!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve had a long career as a fashion photographer, known for my whimsical and cinematic photographs. I’ve shot numerous editorials for Marie Claire, Elle, Vogue , as well as campaigns for Estée Lauder, Clinique, Covergirl, billboards for Target and Mionetto, and I had a wonderful Solo show last year in New York City at Alchemy Gallery.
I think what sets me apart is my ability to connect with my subjects – we all fall in love and laugh and become lifelong friends. My sense of humor plays into everything because for me this connection to my subject is very joyful and I really love discovering drawing out the very best in them.
I like to capture a real moment, and something that tells a story. Something that touches your heart and makes you think.
What matters most to you? Why?
Nothing is more important to me than my family. They are my rock. Make that “rocks”! My parents (86 and 89) are amazing. My kids (4!) are genuinely the coolest smartest funniest people I know and when I’m with them I am in my happy place. We speak the same language which usually ends in lots of laughter. I also have really incredible and very special and very “not boring” friends! This is my tribe and I would be nothing without them.
