Life & Work with Laura Wilson

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Laura Wilson.

Laura Wilson

Hi Laura, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I guess I always had the passion. When I was in school, I used to re-edit my sister’s sweet fifteen photos, and later in high school, my friends and I used to organize these Photoshoots like we were famous people; I was the photographer most of the time. I started studying photography when I was 18 and almost right away got my first job in a studio.

I was mainly the editor ever since the owner was a photographer, too, so I would be taking photos only when she couldn’t. I was also in charge of social media, creating the packages, and running to the printing stores, so I learned a lot. That was definitely the beginning. I got to work with as many as five photographers at the time. I quit photography when I was about to get my college degree in teaching.

I was disappointed that I wasn’t making enough money, and everyone kept telling me to get a real job, but as soon as I could afford my gear, I took up photography again as a hobby because I realized there was no point in quitting on something really liked and before I even noticed, I was running a small photography business and helping people grow their social media.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I like landscape photography, actually I opened an Etsy store to sell my landscapes, but what I really enjoy is making portraits, it’s what I do most right now, from newborns to family photoshoots, weddings, sweet 16.

I’m mostly known for portfolios. I have a lot of friends who are musicians, so in the beginning, I would get a lot of art students, musicians, actors, and models; if you’re in this world, you’re always gonna need photos.

Also, my YouTube channel works as some sort of portfolio for me; I upload behind the scenes, and videos about my moving abroad process, starting over after 25, actually almost 30, and the beautiful places I’ve been to because I love traveling and I strongly believe, life is to meant to be lived.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Do what you love, you’ll figure out the rest on the way, there’s no time to waste and keep learning, be curious, there’s always more to learn, to improve. Try the impossible, you got nothing to lose.
