Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Sheridan
Maggie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up around renovations to our family home, interior design quickly became something that caught my eye. I remember attending several meetings with my parents at the interior designer’s office, trips to fabric stores, furniture showrooms, and paint stores. As an eight year old, I would draw interiors and floor plans every chance I could. My love for creating and dreaming up interior spaces carried through my teen years and when it came time to think about college, there was no question about what I wanted to pursue- interior design. I visited SCAD my sophomore year of high school and immediately knew that this was the place for me! Now, in my senior year at SCAD, my love and appreciation for interior design has only deepened. As I am entering my final few weeks at the university, I am in awe of all of the experiences, knowledge, and confidence I have gained in pursuing my dream career!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
To where I am at today certainly hasn’t been an “easy” path per say, no one goes through life without bumps in the road and challenges they are faced with, but I also think that every obstacle has a purpose in helping to shape who you are! I particularly struggle with change and these past few years have brought a lot of change in my life both for wonderful and difficult reasons. For example, the transition from living with my parents in high school to living on my own at college was definitely more difficult than I thought it would be and uncomfortable at times, however I wouldn’t have had the opportunities and life that I have now if I didn’t push through and overcome them. The past two summers I have spent in different cities for internships that were in places that I hardly knew anyone. While it was difficult to be in a new environment and having to navigate the world truly on my own, living in Nashville and Los Angeles offered wonderful experiences both personally and in advancing my interior design knowledge. I truly wouldn’t be the person I am if I didn’t have challenges that helped to form the trajectory of my life!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In pursuing a career in interior design I have had experiences in different types of interior design through a variety of projects in my classes and in internships. Having spent a summer in Nashville working for a small residential design firm to working for a global commercial furniture company the following summer in Los Angeles, I pull from a wide variety of specialized skills in different sectors of interior design. Currently, I am working on my Capstone project, the last project I have at SCAD before I graduate. This project is for a specialized facility center for adolescents in eating disorder recovery. In dedicating weeks of research for this project I identified the importance in simulating a residential feel for the facility to allow patients to be in a comfortable environment as they are working through an emotional time in their lives. At the same time, the center also has to function as a healthcare space to be able to facilitate the necessary programming for recovery. In blending these two I am able to merge the knowledge I gained in my internships to create a unique facility. It is a really meaningful project to me and being able to end my time at SCAD with such a personal project that is a true reflection of the experiences I have had in school and in my internships is so surreal!
