Life & Work with Randall Lyvers of Savannah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Randall Lyvers

Hi Randall, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well, I have to say that all the credit goes to my friends from back home that got me into photography in the first place. I played music for a number of years and toured the states but I never had the thought of documenting anything I was doing or seeing. Coming from music, I spoke into a microphone every night to express my ideas for years, and for some reason at the end it just became so taxing to speak. I have always been an observer of the world and something instantly clicked when I bought my first film camera from my friend, Rico. Photos gave me the ability to speak again and have something to say that was more ambiguous while also being more honest. I’m 31 now and have been shooting for about 6 years and it’s been the most consistent art form I have ever been fortunate enough to find.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The life of the artist is NEVER smooth. It is so cyclical in the way that you have your time of pouring out every bit yourself and your time of hibernation and creative ruts. I have tried to go full freelance before and failed, and I’m going to attempt going freelance yet again this year. I may fail again, but I only have this life to live and my wish is to create my best work in this brief life.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I primarily shoot film photography. The simplicity of this form has slowed me down and made me much more attuned to the world around me. I chase the authenticity of real life and the full range of emotions from sorrow to joy and melancholy. I would say that I am most proud of my first ever photo book, “Lower Country.” I built that from the ground up, designed the layout, wrote, edited, and self-published and sold out the project. My work is best known for its depiction of solitude and quiet chaos- there’s always an uneasiness looming even if you can’t see it.

What matters most to you?
Truth. I think that’s why I love shooting my subject matter the way I do. Houses in disarray, forgotten objects, people existing as they are. They cannot be fabricated or dismissed, they just are.
