Life & Work with Renée Lynn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Renée Lynn.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hi y’all, Renée here of Funky Butterfly. I am an artist who enjoys creating art with color, texture, and emotion. I want my art to tell a story and make you stop and think a minute. I’m a former hairstylist and make-up artist from Annapolis Maryland. I love using my background in how I blend colors and create my pieces. Marrying military we have lived all over the United States and are currently loving life in gorgeous Savannah, Georgia.

After raising two kiddos and having a bit more time on my hands I decided to start creating again. It started with upcycling vintage handbags which moved into creating unique jewelry pieces and then selling my photography in multiple local shops in Annapolis. It happened very organically with painting furniture which now moved into full-time canvas art. I have painted furniture, jeans, handbags, and jewelry. I truly believe everyone has an artist inside of them and once you awaken them there is no stopping you. My favorite saying is, “It’s just paint y’all, you can always go right back over it.”

I have been a mentor teaching my funky ways, retailing an all-natural paint line to now being a content creator for a fabulous company, Paint Pixie. I have multiple teaching tutorials on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. I believe in sharing my God-given talent and love when a client has a personal connection to one of my pieces. I have shipped all over the US and internationally.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a new career can be scary but the rewards outweigh the fears. Putting yourself out there on live video is terrifying but I can honestly say I have never had more fun. Being a stylist/make-up artist you connect with your clients and now doing live videos you can obtain that same connection.

Do you mess up live? of course, you do. Can people be mean and hurtful? of course, they can… just keep going.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Most people will recognize a Funky Buttery right away. I am known for my explosive color, texture, and unusual take on faces, landscape, and blending colors on furniture.

Right now, I’ve been exploring a very unique take on funky faces. I love the imperfections and the unusual makeup style I am creating. A lot of people can paint beautiful perfect faces, I am not one of them but that’s why I love it!

For me as an artist what makes me the proudest is when I can unlock the inner artist in someone. When the lightbulb goes off and they understand a technique that I’m teaching but more importantly to take pride in their art and own it!

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Be yourself! You can only be you and the minute you’re not, people will see straight through you.
