Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Duncan.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I don’t know why I never considered becoming a hairstylist. Growing up, I cut my dolls’ hair and gave my friends terrible bangs along with coating their hair in box dye. When I dropped out of university and decided to get my Master Cosmetologist license at a local technical school, it all clicked into place. I found a salon (40 Volume Salon) that nurtured my growth and pushed me to be the best stylist I can be. I had a ton of support in deciding to give extensions a try, and once I did, I never looked back. I was constantly looking to grow my skill in sewing wefts, getting certified in multiple well known methods and traveling all over the country from Florida all the way to Utah to take as many classes as I could.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m someone who unfortunately loves to learn by experience. I’ve made so many mistakes in my career to get to the point I’m at. I think many hairstylists have this innate trait of having to mess things up to get better. Thankfully, these mistakes have been stepping stones in my story and have made me a better stylist, mentor, and team player. I have learned to make my failures become my strengths by guiding other baby stylists to become more confident in their craft (and hopefully not screw up like I have).
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
One of the best career decisions I ever made was getting certified with The Foundation Academy. I learned a totally new way to install weft extensions than what I had seen in the past that’s totally healthy, very secure, and of course transformational. By using a braided technique instead of a beaded technique, I’m able to give my guests an entirely new experience than any other hair extension stylist in Savannah, within a few hundred miles. I love love LOVE giving my guests the hair of their dreams while not sacrificing comfort or hair health.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I’ve learned to listen to my gut. Confidence has never come natural to me, it actually feels wrong. Trusting myself at work has instilled a confidence in me that rolls over into my personal life too.
