Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Light.
Sarah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always had a creative/artsy heart. My journey started with drawing, creating decals, digital designs, YouTube videos, custom doormats, clay earrings, and now photography.
One thing I love about being a creative is that I am able to take the skills I’ve learned and create products for people to enjoy. Growing up, my friends and I used to take pictures and have contests to see whose were better. At that time, I never took my skills seriously.
It wasn’t until recently (last year) when my boyfriend and I had our first professional shoot and received our images that I was so taken back. I wanted to create that! I wanted to make someone feel the excitement and joy that I felt at the moment of opening the gallery for the first time.
So here I am in hopes that I can do that for someone. Moments are special, I believe they need to be lived by you and captured by me!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not been smooth sailing. I started my business at the beginning of 2022. The startup of any business is difficult. Gaining clients has been my greatest struggle. Photography is a very over-saturated business. Which is great, that just means we have to work hard and stay motivated to stick out.
Whether that be editing styles, personality, prices, etc. It depends on how a person runs their business. I’m six months in and I am just now getting the hang of it. It’s the mistakes that have taught me the most! With all of that being said, something I’ve also found hard is to stop comparing my work to someone else’s.
Especially when my timeline is different from theirs. It’s not fair to myself and will in the end only discourage me from creating beautiful images for future clients. This is a big problem we see with social media these days!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work as a photographer is very broad at the moment.
I specialize in a large number of sessions such as portraits, families, couples, engagements, maternity’s, graduations, weddings, etc. I am most proud of how fast I have been able to grow in a short amount of time. I’ve dedicated a lot of time and energy into this business in hopes that someday it’ll show.
I have booked a 2-day photography workshop in Oregon to expand my skill-set and give my clients the best possible experience and product when they book with me. I am so excited to share the amazing content, the views will be stunning!
What would you say brings you happiness?
Family, friends, sunshine, smiles, and coffee!
Family. Mine will never leave my side when I’m in a rut. It’s been a tough two years and I’ve leaned on them big time.
Friends. They are hard to come by in my opinion so the real ones… I’m keeping forever!
Sunshine. It’s the sun! You need vitamin C! It breaks the depression spell for me.
Smiles. Those come with laughs and that’s always a good time (I also want to be a dentist so it only makes sense).
Coffee. Can’t ever go wrong with an iced caramel macchiato in hand!
