Life & Work with Sinisa Ciric of Starland (Savannah)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sinisa Ciric.

Hi Sinisa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of contributing in various artistic and leadership capacities, including Concertmaster and Director of Artistic Operations. I’m honored to join Savannah Music Festival and I share their deep commitment to advancing Savannah’s musical landscape through collaboration, innovation, and meaningful community impact. Together, the SMF team and I aim to expand Savannah’s reputation as a world-class destination for the arts.

Originally from Serbia, my journey as a musician has taken me across the globe—as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral leader. Alongside performing, I’ve always been passionate about music education and mentorship. I previously led the Strings Conservatory Program at Savannah Classical Academy and served as Artistic Director of the Larsen Spotlight Chamber Music Series.

In 2023, I was honored to be one of just 36 professionals worldwide selected for the League of American Orchestras’ Essentials of Orchestra Management program, in partnership with Juilliard Extension. I’m also proud to be a 2024 graduate of Leadership Savannah, one of the nation’s longest-running civic leadership initiatives. These experiences continue to shape my vision for using music as a force for connection, education, and cultural enrichment.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Stepping into this leadership role, I recognize that there will be challenges to navigate—chief among them sustaining financial growth while keeping our programming accessible and inclusive. The evolving landscape of arts funding, audience expectations, and post-pandemic shifts in attendance habits all require adaptive thinking and strategic planning. Balancing innovation with tradition can also be complex, especially in a festival with such a rich history. But I see these obstacles as opportunities—to listen closely, collaborate deeply, and lead with purpose as we chart a path forward that is both artistically bold and community-centered.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Joining the Savannah Music Festival is an incredible honor and an exciting new chapter in my journey. I’ve long admired the festival’s reputation for artistic excellence, innovative programming, and its deep roots in the community. As someone who is passionate about both performance and arts leadership, I’m inspired by the opportunity to help shape the next era of this extraordinary organization. I look forward to collaborating with the talented team, engaging with our audiences, and building on the festival’s legacy to create meaningful musical experiences that resonate locally and globally.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success in my role as Executive Director of the Savannah Music Festival means fostering an environment where artistic excellence, community engagement, and education thrive together. It’s about expanding the festival’s reach while staying true to its roots—supporting world-class performances, nurturing emerging talent, and creating access to music for people of all ages and backgrounds. I envision a festival that not only showcases incredible artistry but also strengthens Savannah’s identity as a cultural destination. Ultimately, success will be measured by the connections we build—with audiences, artists, educators, and partners—and the lasting impact we make through the power of music.
