Today we’d like to introduce you to Tricia Callahan.
Hi Tricia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was 17, I noticed an ad for youth correspondents for my local paper. After watching romantic comedies like Never Been Kissed and How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days I too wanted to be the leading lady, the ever competent, beautiful, quirky, and wholly successful journalist.
Running my first cover story that year had me over the moon, but my creativity and inner angst was yearning for an additional outlet. That was when I put together my first zine by accident, and the seed was planted.
Attending college in my hometown of Fredericksburg, VA my goal was simple: I was going to be a music reporter. Trouble was my published work had taken on a much more serious tone, and writing about music became a rarity. I wanted autonomy; I wanted to interview, observe, and report about what I loved most, music all while dabbling in my other passions of art and poetry. That is when my publication No Apologies was born.
After assembling a team of hard-working editors, writers, and graphic designers, I printed a monthly magazine. They were distributed on campuses, local bookstores, and Plan 9 music stores along the Northern East Coast. Glossy covers caught the attention of The Village Voice, and I interned there in the winter of 2011. The city lights had me convinced that anything was possible.
Graduation prompted the daunting challenges of adulthood and the inevitable decline of print. This pushed No Apologies into a 2-year hiatus. After reemerging in 2014, I reimagined No Apologies as a music-centric online publication that would moonlight as a physical 90’s inspired zine.
Now, with the connectivity of the web, I have contributors from all around the globe and an all-female staff that continues to give readers top-notch: interviews, reviews, personal columns, op-eds, art, and poetry.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a journey! How we consume media in 2022 is planets away from 2008. With the current climate of journalism and sheer saturation of content, No Apologies certainly had to adapt and will continue to do so. I am optimistic about the future.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a journalist first and foremost, but I also create art pieces and write poetry.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I learned how important it is to tell the people you love you love them. I also put together an article with a number of other perspectives about covid and being quarantined here: https://noapologiesmagazine.com/2020/05/05/30-flirty-quarantined/
