Meet Ari Young Sang of Savannah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ari Young Sang.

Hi Ari, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m originally from Jamaica. Born and Raised. I came to Savannah College of Art and Design for Graphic Design – switched a to Business of Beauty and Fragrance and Fashion Marketing and Management- now I’m in Art Direction for Advertising and Branding. I’m aiming to become an art director/designer and currently work at the school’s fashion publication, SCAD Manor, for the past four years. I am also a part time makeup artist. My whole life has been about art, creating and experimenting with different art forms and mediums and see where it takes me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. There has been a couple of challenges but nothing God, my friends and family haven’t helped me to overcome. I’ve had some personal issues when it came to my environment but my family and friends have always been super supportive of everything I do and achieve. After coming to SCAD, however, I’ve definitely been blessed in more ways than one and I’m very excited to see what else I can overcome.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I mostly specialize in art direction, creative direction, ideation, editorials, beauty and fashion and mostly magazine work. I absolutely love magazines. They are my favorite piece of art and physical media. It’s a love that has grown for many years now. I also love poetry, tv, film and any other visual media. I am mostly known however for my makeup artistry. I’ve been dabbling in it for roughly 11 years now but officially started during the pandemic. I think what sets me apart is my dedication and commitment towards what I do. I always make sure it’s done to the best of my ability, especially for makeup. I’m always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needs but I know when to take time for myself and my personal life.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is brought when someone is satisfied with intention or what ever thing they have created. I find success when I feel satisfied and overjoyed with what I produce. If the final product evokes the mission set out for it, then I deem that has successful. It’s not always about money or recognition, but I find that internal gratitude is just as better, if not better than external. It shows how confident and secure one is within themselves. It’s been a process and progress for me when it comes to this.
