Meet Barry Petrea of LowCountry LifeScan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barry Petrea.

Hi Barry, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am originally from Thunderbolt, Georgia and my family has been involved in local and state politics for over half a century. Growing up in that environment gave me a deep appreciation for community, service, and the importance of making a meaningful impact in people’s lives.

My professional journey has always been centered around healthcare and helping others, which ultimately led me to found LowCountry LifeScan in Bluffton, South Carolina. I recognized a major gap in preventive healthcare—many serious conditions like heart disease, cancer, and aneurysms often go undetected until it’s too late. I wanted to change that by making advanced imaging more accessible, affordable, and focused on early detection.

Starting LowCountry LifeScan was driven by a simple but powerful mission: to help people live longer, healthier lives through early diagnosis. We provide safe, non-invasive CT screening services that empower patients with knowledge about their health before symptoms even appear.

Getting to where I am today has been a combination of hard work, community support, and a strong belief in preventive medicine. I’m passionate about educating people on the importance of taking a proactive approach to their health, and I’m proud to be building something that can truly make a difference in our community’s lifespan, healthspan, and overall quality of life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Like most entrepreneurs, I’ve faced my share of challenges along the way. Starting a healthcare business comes with a unique set of obstacles—from navigating regulations and compliance requirements to building trust in a field where credibility is everything.

One of the biggest challenges has been educating the community on the value of preventive CT screening. Many people are used to seeking care only after symptoms appear, so shifting that mindset toward early detection takes time, effort, and consistent outreach.

There have also been the typical challenges of building a business from the ground up—establishing operations, growing awareness, and making sure we can offer services that are both high-quality and affordable. Balancing accessibility with maintaining top-tier technology and standards has been an ongoing focus.

That said, those challenges have been incredibly rewarding to work through. They’ve pushed me to become more resilient, more creative, and more committed to the mission. Seeing the impact we’re making—helping people catch serious health issues early—makes every obstacle along the way worth it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about LowCountry LifeScan?
LowCountry LifeScan is a preventive health imaging company based in Bluffton, South Carolina, focused on early detection of some of the most serious and life-threatening conditions—before symptoms ever appear. We specialize in non-invasive CT screening for heart disease, cancer, aneurysms, and other critical health issues, with the goal of improving both lifespan and healthspan for our patients.

What really sets us apart is our focus on accessibility and education. Traditionally, advanced imaging has been something people only receive after a problem is suspected. We’ve flipped that model by making these scans affordable, quick, and available to individuals who want to take a proactive approach to their health. Our process is simple, efficient, and designed with the patient experience in mind—no referrals, no long wait times, and no unnecessary barriers.

We’re also known for taking the time to educate our patients. We don’t just perform a scan—we help people understand what’s going on inside their bodies and why it matters. That empowerment is a big part of who we are as a brand.

What I’m most proud of is the trust we’re building in the community. When someone comes to us, they’re taking an important step toward protecting their future, and we take that responsibility seriously. Every scan we perform has the potential to change—or even save—a life.

More than anything, I want readers to know that LowCountry LifeScan is about giving people control over their health. Early detection can make all the difference, and we’re here to make that opportunity accessible to as many people as possible.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my best childhood memories is watching my father, Jimmy Petrea, win his first mayoral election in the Town of Thunderbolt, Georgia, where I grew up. I can still remember the energy and excitement in the room that night—the sense that something important was happening, not just for our family, but for the entire community.

At the time, I didn’t fully understand the weight of it, but I could feel how much it meant to him and to the people around us. As I got older, I came to appreciate what that moment really represented: hard work, dedication, and a genuine commitment to serving others.

Seeing my father go on to serve and be reelected over the years left a lasting impression on me. It showed me the importance of leadership, integrity, and putting your community first. That experience helped shape who I am today and plays a big role in how I approach my own work—whether it’s in business or in giving back, it’s always about making a positive impact on the lives of others.
