Meet Cassandra Thornton of BSweet’s Pie & Cake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassandra Thornton.

Hi Cassandra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It all started back in 2018, a few weeks before Thanksgiving. My daughter, Tiffany Sherrie, and I were discussing our holiday menu. In the midst of our planning, she suggested that I consider offering my famous sweet potato pies for sale. I laughed, but I entertained the idea.

I thought, why not, so I offered to bake pies for the family on friends registered on Facebook. To my surprise, after the initial post, I had 10 -12 orders to fill for Thanksgiving. The customers expressed how much they enjoyed my pies, and word began to spread. Christmas rolled around, and there were orders for pies and cakes too. Next, I worked on my cake recipes. I’d find myself spending hours researching to educate myself. In the oddest way, I found baking to be very challenging but therapeutic. Now I’m baking all year round.

Most customers are very honest about their feedback, so I made sure to be open to honest feedback. I knew it would only make me a better baker. Consistency is the vehicle that has driven me this far. In addition, I value my customers, so I am always doing my part to offer them great desserts and amazing customer service.

My vision is to bake great desserts to help spread love and happiness around the world. I believe great desserts bring people together. I’ve never seen a person stay unhappy while eating great desserts. This is how I’ve come to where I am as a company.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My greatest struggle was making the transition into baking like a professional business after the loss of my mother. With this in mind, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to be bothered. It was tough. Yes, baking made me happy that I could share happiness, but at times the grief of my mother was very overwhelming.

I knew I had to get moving if I was going to keep all of the new customers I had acquired. Therefore, I began spending time reflecting on my mother’s baking and the times we spent in the kitchen. It began fueling me to push ahead because I knew she would’ve encouraged me to go forth.

Secondly, once I began to push forward, it was clear I needed to roll up and get to work. I learned that there are two components to what I do: I bake, and I operate the business. It’s a lot of work. As a baker, I am always working to improve my skills.

On the other hand, as a businesswoman, I have to operate my company professionally. There are growing pains, but the joy, passion, and happiness keep me pushing every day.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I specialize in buttercream cakes. Plus, I offer my famous sweet potato pies, specialty cakes, and fruit tarts. I’m known for baking delicious homemade desserts.

What sets BSweet’s apart? First, my desserts are baked from scratch, moist, and presented well. Second, I am big on taking care of my customer’s needs. Third, I love what I do, and you can taste it.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking?
I’m a risk-taker, and I’m not afraid to ignore “the box.” My greatest risk is betting on myself. I know who I am, and I am confident in my ability to go forth because that’s what great people do. I’ve learned to take advantage of my disadvantages and create opportunities for myself and others.
