Today we’d like to introduce you to David Lee.
David, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
For a long time, my life was defined by a different kind of precision. I was working in machine programming, a technical career that paid the bills but left me completely uninspired. Even though my brother was already in the tattoo industry, I pushed back against the craft for years, convinced I needed to stay on a more “traditional” path.
Everything changed during the pandemic. I found myself unemployed and, honestly, a bit lost. I started “hiding out” at my brother’s shop, mostly just to have a place to go while I tried to figure out my next move. I didn’t even want my family to know I wasn’t looking for another company job; I was just drifting.
Then came the moment that changed everything. I tried to learn tattooing and was working on a piece when the stencil accidentally wiped away. Without a backup, I had to pivot and freehand the design directly onto the skin. In that split second of creative adrenaline, everything clicked. I remember thinking, “THIS is what I am supposed to be doing.”
My professional alias, Darkest Light, comes from a transformative period. It represent that small, persistent glimmer of hope that guided me through the “darkness” of unemployment and uncertainty.
For me, this isn’t just about tattoos—it’s about the journey of finding a truly lovely life on the other side of hardship.
That’s my story and that’s how it has led to me starting Die Lovely Ink. A new and modern tattoo studio established in Spartanburg, SC in May of 2025.
Die Lovely Ink exists to create lasting art rooted in love, meaning, and identity. Tattoos that honor your story and stay with you for life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Looking back, I realize I spent so much time mastering the needle that I didn’t focus enough on the business side of things early on. That’s been a huge wake-up call for me, but it’s also what drives me now to constantly sharpen how we operate.
I’ve shifted my focus to making sure our content and marketing aren’t just about one person, it’s a team effort. I want the entire shop to exude an elite standard so that when a client looks at us, they don’t just see a tattoo studio; they see a professional, top-tier experience that makes them confident in booking an appointment with us.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As the owner and lead artist here, I specialize in a Paintery / Watercolor style, in Black & Gray, and the Dark Arts forms.
I’ve been in the industry for five years now, and while I’m still relatively young in the game, I’ve never been content just staying in my bubble. I’ve always believed that “iron sharpens iron,” so I started traveling to tattoo conventions to put my work up against the most skilled, competitive artists in the country.
Getting that professional validation meant everything to me. I’ve walked away with a first-place win for Black and Grey, along with a third-place finish for Tattoo of the Day in color. Those wins weren’t just about the trophies; they were proof that the risks I took to get here were worth it.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I try not to rely on luck and more so on effort, skills, growth, and continuous improvements.
