Meet Hayley Black of Hayley Black Vintage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hayley Black.

Hi Hayley, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My grandmother was a seamstress and some of my earliest memories are of picking out fabrics and patterns for myself and my Barbies. We would talk about how it would look, envision where I would be wearing the outfit, and she would magically make it happen. From that point on, I loved the art of dressing and had goals of incorporating this into my career.

I was a top student throughout school and attended the College of Charleston on an academic scholarship. To pay for my personal expenses I took a job at an upscale boutique on King Street. It was there that I networked with designers and landed my first internship at a Fashion PR company in New York City.

From there, I worked for the corporate headquarters of Estee Lauder, Burberry, and Tesla. After 10+ years of a corporate career, I opened my vintage shop on Bay Street in Savannah – and it has been a dream come true!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a winding road! There have been periods of deep reflection and restarts, for both graduate education and travel, and periods of fast growth. I obtained my Master’s Degree from Clemson University young and had difficulty returning to the corporate world. I was told I had too much education and too little work experience. I eventually took a sales role at Burberry (that did not require any degree much less two) and was able to quickly work my way up the organization once I was in the company.

As you know, we’re big fans of Hayley Black Vintage. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I own an upscale vintage boutique on Bay Street in Savannah. I specialize in pieces from the 1960s/1970s with a penchant for exotic fabrics like vintage fur, snakeskin, and crocodile. I offer an upscale vintage shopping experience in a jewel box showroom expertly curated. It is a small and purposeful collection that is easy on the eyes and easy to shop!

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was curious, conscientious, animated, and friendly – with a deep appreciation for any book I could get my hand on!
