Today we’d like to introduce you to Jentayah Young.
Hi Jentayah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I remember living in New York being 10 years old and being the photographer during our family Thanksgiving gathering. My mom purchased the camera for herself to use but I used it more than anyone in the house.
This is where my love for photography began. I loved going through the settings, playing with the different camera modes, and trying out different angles for photos. Years later in high school, I asked for a point-and-shoot camera for Christmas.
I was so ecstatic to have a camera that was all mine. I took pictures of a lot but I still wanted more from my images. In my second year of college, I purchased my first DSLR, a Canon t3i, that I still use to this day.
My love for beautiful images, creative shoots, and capturing cool things in general runs so deep. Photography feeds my soul and I’m so glad that I have been able to put myself in a position to get paid for one of my passion.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Photography has been a pretty smooth road for the most part but the hardest part is learning how to run a business. Especially in this age of social media, it’s hard to figure out how to effectively run a small business.
There are so many moving parts and so many different pieces of advice to sort through on how to grow and how manage your business.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a portrait photographer. I am most proud of how much I continue to educate myself in this field.
I love learning, I thoroughly enjoy perfecting my craft, and I enjoy the progress.
As far as what sets me apart… in this field of photography that sense of individuality is so hard to find because I can easily find someone else doing something similar to what I do. I’m still figuring that part out.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to not compare yourself. Everyone’s journey is different because we all have different experiences, priorities, and resources.
No one’s situation is the same. I don’t pressure myself to be further than I am because I truly believe I’m going at the pace I need to go.
