Meet Kate Scrivner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Scrivner.

Hi Kate, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
It has all evolved so wonderfully and organically. I always say there’s no way that I could’ve planned it.

I have always trusted God’s plan for the way things happen and I love to look back and know that He had His hand in it all. I went to Columbus State University and studied studio art with a focus on painting.

I had the incredible opportunity to study under Bo Bartlett, a world-renown artist. I had the privilege of painting under him for four years, during high school and college. I learned so much from him and am so grateful for that experience.

During college, I started selling my work and taking commissions. I painted lots of dog portraits in the beginning! I still love painting animals. In 2019, some friends of mine were getting married and asked me to paint at their wedding. I was iffy, but eventually said yes and I am so glad I did! I had the best time, I felt so comfortable and alive.

After that first wedding, I started booking weddings more consistently and now it is my full-time job! I am painting at 55 weddings this year, 2022. I get to travel all over and meet so many wonderful people. I love the relationships I have formed through this job.

During the week, I paint all different types of commissions, wedding paintings, dogs, portraits, and more! In the last few years, I have really focused on improving and developing my style and growing as a painter. It is always evolving and growing, so I can’t wait to see what’s to come in the future!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Initially, when I went to college for art, I had lots of people questioning why I would choose to study art and what kind of job I thought I could have. I had ideas for art-related jobs, but I really just felt confident in the idea of going to school for art. I am so thankful that my family has always been so supportive.

They pushed me to do what I loved and what I thought was best. There will always be people that will doubt you or discourage you from following your passion. I would say my biggest struggle was getting past what everyone else was saying about going to school for art.

I can’t say it has always been a smooth road. I had to learn how to run a business while in school and how to prioritize work and school and social life. It has definitely been fun, but there have been lots of late nights and lots of multi-tasking along the way. I am grateful for what that time taught me!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a live wedding painter and fine artist! I specialize in wedding painting, but I also paint all kinds of commissions and collection-based pieces in my studio during the week.

I am most proud of the growth in my style over the years. It is so much fun to look back at paintings from when I first started out and to see how much I have grown.

I am known for painting faces and giving the bride and groom lots of detail. I love when a wedding guest says “Wow! That looks just like them!!”

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite memories always involve being outside, seeing the beauty of the world, with my family.

My favorite childhood memory would have to be crab hunting on the beach with my family and chasing my older brother around with a giant crab!
