Meet Lauren Hearn of Richmond Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Hearn.

Hi Lauren, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Photography has always been around me growing up. My dad was a photographer, so I spent a lot of my childhood watching him behind the camera capturing my childhood memories through photographs. That early exposure definitely shaped my love for photography. My brother-in-law is also a photographer, which continued to inspire me and gave me the encouragement to pursue it more seriously.

As I spent more time behind the camera, what began as a small passion quickly started to grow into something more. As I continued learning and investing in my craft, my style naturally developed into a documentary approach that focuses on genuine, candid moments. I’ve always been drawn to the real emotions in a session; the in-between moments, the laughter, and the connections that make each family unique. Over time, that passion turned into a business, and through word of mouth and the support of amazing clients, Lauren Hearn Photography has continued to grow.

Lauren Hearn Photography has grown to include weddings, maternity, newborn, family photography and so much more. Through word-of-mouth, supportive clients, and a lot of hard work behind the scenes, my business has continued to grow. Today, I feel incredibly grateful that something that began as a passion has turned into the opportunity to document some of life’s most meaningful moments for so many families.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like most small businesses, it definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. I was building my photography business while also working a full-time job, which meant a lot of late nights editing and weekends spent shooting sessions. Learning how to balance both responsibilities while still growing the business required a lot of dedication and patience.

Another challenge along the way was overcoming imposter syndrome. When you’re building something creative, it can be easy to question yourself or compare your work to others in the industry. Over time, I’ve learned to trust my style and the experience I create for my clients, and that confidence has been a huge part of my growth.

Looking back, those challenges helped shape both my work and my business. They pushed me to keep learning, stay consistent, and ultimately build a photography business that I’m truly proud of.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
One of the things I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me to document some of the most meaningful moments in their lives. Whether it’s a wedding day, welcoming a new baby, or a growing family, being invited into those moments is something I never take for granted. Building a business that families continue to come back to year after year is incredibly rewarding.

What sets me apart is the experience I try to create during each session. I take the time to connect with every family member, including the children, so everyone feels comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera. When people feel at ease, the smiles and interactions become much more genuine. My goal is always to capture those natural moments and real connections, so families receive images that truly reflect who they are.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Overall, I believe the industry will continue moving toward more personalized experiences. Clients are looking for photographers who can not only take beautiful images but also create a comfortable environment and tell their story in a genuine way. I’m praying for many more years of doing what I love!
