Meet Luke Liscom of Savannah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke Liscom

Hi Luke, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I originally went to school for environmental science, but after taking a few core classes I found out that it wasn’t for me. I wanted to pursue something that kept my mind engaged, with research and problem-solving, and then I found a pamphlet for the graphic design program which was exactly that.

After graduation, I landed in the animation side of marketing where I could experiment with projection mapping, unique printing methods, fabrication, and other design skills. I fell in love with the variety of client work and the creative community.

During the pandemic, after getting married, I decided to go full-time freelance. That year was full of scary “unknowns,” but it was a time of growth and continual experimentation. I did that for a year and then needed to find a more stable job since I had a baby on the way. After a few twists and turns and more life-changing events, we decided to move to Savannah.

We’ve been here a little over two years and loved every minute of it. I’ve found communities, started others, and I’m still excited about what else the future holds.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Moving to Savannah was initially tough. It was hard to find where I fit in. I didn’t go to SCAD so there wasn’t a network I could tap into, so I decided I’d try and make one. I attended a few events around town and pulled enough people together to start a CreativeMornings chapter. My goal for CM is to become a community where people can find where they belong. Even if they don’t feel like CM is the right fit for them, I want to be able to point them in the right direction.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love storytelling. Animation can be an amazing method for storytelling, which is mainly what I do, but I’m starting to explore more and more methods to do so. I think what I’m starting to be known for is less of a specific thing and more of “Luke is that guy who does all those different things.”

I have a love for bread making, Sewing, animation, graphic design, illustration, bookmaking, printmaking, and photography. I’m constantly trying new things that may or may not always stick, but it makes my life feel full.

In an age where new discoveries are almost nonexistent, personal discovery has become the new pursuit. Exploring new perspectives from the people around me, exploring the history of the city I live in, and exploring new ways to express myself is a daily adventure.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory isn’t that exciting. I grew up in upstate New York but we would travel down to Florida every year. Looking back on those road trips, I always remember falling asleep or staring out the window at night and watching the rays of light from the street lights fill the car. The rhythm of the light flowing in and out of the car as we drove under and between lights was always so comforting.
