Today we’d like to introduce you to Marya Nguyen.
Hi Marya, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Hi, thank you for having me! So, I pivoted in my career path just as the pandemic hit. Like many others I was trying to find my next move. I was in digital marketing and the otherwise buzzing industry discussing trends, insights, and forecasts became what felt like a deafening, long silence.
No one knew what was going to unfold. No one could imagine how our lives would change.
My web design studio began with discovering my creative community online. I dedicated myself to a web design course that lended me clarity along my businesses’ development. A creative at heart, I also started decorating my home, I made dalgona coffee and picked up the sewing projects I had put down.
During this time I learned many extremely valuable lessons. The very first being, find your people. Find the community that will support you and give that initial push you need to start.
Yangu Web Studios is what it is today because of that community; the mentors and peers that helped me take those first, uncertain steps. They trusted me and collaborated with me on those early projects which helped me develop my process and creative flow. I built upon my skills to synthesize creative inspiration, strategy, and problem solving into legitimate, marketable skills.
As a first gen Vietnamese American woman raised in a turbulent single-parent household, I acknowledge and celebrate skills and tools I’ve refined along the way. And I also recognize the restrictions of my financial autonomy because of my socio-economic status and the decisions that it impacts.
I decided to move to Georgia (from California) to grow my business. And since then, I’ve connected with some incredible folks and joined their vibrant, creative community!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ouu so challenging, and yet equally rewarding. Something I’ve learned is that your personal growth is synonymous with your business/entrepreneurial journey.
The financial challenges are something we talk about all the time. I don’t subscribe to the hustle mentality where we sacrifice mental/physical health in exchange for small gains. The work behind articulating my own success comes from setting boundaries and routines to expand my energy and spaces. But it has been an ongoing challenge.
It’s one thing to say I don’t believe in sacrificing my mental health for my business, but it’s another to create a self-care routine and learn the discipline to practice it when things get overwhelming. (Hello, midweek emotional Uber Eats chicken wings!)
Your behaviors and patterns around work, time, communication, money—everything starts with your thoughts and beliefs. Training yourself to grow in those ways in tandem with honing your craft, finding new clients, and building relationships forces you to strike a unique balance.
These days I find myself “midi-stressed” about booking out consistent client work. In the same vein, I am enjoying a life of abundance in time to be outdoors and breathe. I believe our best work comes from grounded, rested, and intentional space to just *exist.*
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
