Meet Mike Carroll of Midtown Savannah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Carroll.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been a commercial photographer for nearly 30 years. My career began in Charlotte, NC, where I worked with a diverse range of clients, including advertising agencies, manufacturers, corporate clients, colleges and universities, and real estate developers.
Clients you might recognize: Lowe’s Home Improvement, Husqvarna, Wells Fargo, Truist Bank, Winthrop University, Charlotte Pipe and Foundry, Duke Energy, Nationwide Insurance…to name a few.
I’ve photographed CEOs from Blue-Chip Fortune 500 companies, technicians on an assembly line, Models riding horses on Columbus Beach in the Turks and Caicos, NASCAR drivers, Farmers using the latest technology, and Golfers after major victories.
I’ve built teams and produced photoshoots from coast to coast. I’ve watched as technology has changed, all the while keeping an organic and natural approach to my art.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth, but with a lot of shakeouts. I’ve always been able to build relationships based on a common goal, great work for a fair price, without drama. I’ve navigated recessions and pandemics. The latest test has been tariffs. It’s been a challenging year, but I hope it will settle down soon. I work with many manufacturers that have eliminated their budgets.
I pivot and keep my head up. I’ve branched out to new things, and that helps.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I can build a relationship quickly with my subject. From bank presidents to line workers building tools, I find that one thing that we can talk about is. I let each person know how important they are and how much of a privilege it is to photograph them. We’re all the same at the end of the day.
I also plan and prepare with exhaustion. By the time I’m on set, I’ve gone through the shoot a hundred times. BE PREPARED. My team is also the best. We’re all equal on set, and we’re all working to create something special.

What’s next?
No big changes. I plan to continue growing and doing great work. I’ve just moved to the Savannah area, so rebuilding is my hope. Getting the word out that I’m here and that I can be a true asset on the right project.
The new buzz is AI. We shall see how it finds a place. I believe in authentic relationships, and AI can’t replicate that, so it will have its place, but hopefully, there will be those who prefer a genuine relationship.
