Meet Monique Gulley of The Lynell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Gulley.

Hi Monique, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey within the hair world started as young as twelve years old. My mother; Lennell A. Gulley, was my greatest influence with starting hair. She battled a rare disease called, Huntington’s disease, which lead to her teaching me how to nurture and style our hair.

Due to her not being able, I would soon become my mother’s protégé. Performing at-home perms and trims on her as well as myself. I felt it was only right to name my brand after my late mother who passed when I was only 16 years old.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I endured many struggles when starting my custom unit brand. Aside from finding ways to fund my brand; it took me two years to perfect my craft until I felt I was ready to start offering services. Not only that, the pressure from the ones close to me to go another route. With my skill not being where I wanted it to be, I almost gave in.

That’s until I decided to go back to school and attend Savannah Technical College to obtain my Master’s cosmetology degree. Which I have now graduated from (2021 graduate). The thought of juggling work, school, and my brand discouraged me more. But I knew during the 2020 pandemic that was the perfect time to take the leap of faith into my dreams.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
TheLynellCo is a custom unit and essential brand. We offer custom unit services, which consist of constructing custom hair wigs such as frontals and closures. We also offer maintenance, cuts, and coloring services. The essential part of our brand includes hair accessories such as silk wraps, melt bands, and accessories to pair with your services. Now including Mink lashes and Earrings.

We started our brand as a one-stop-shop but we no longer provide a long list of items in our collection. We based our collection on quality, so when you think about TheLynellCo you think luxury. We like to view hair services as a luxury and our prices reflect that.

As you can see, the faces of our brand are pictured as highly valued women. Serving class and elegance. Bringing a new unique feel to the beauty world. The image that we portray as a brand reminds me of no other brand which sets us apart from the rest!

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Some define success as just receiving the end goal, the trophy, and the fame. I find that I enjoy the outcome more when I appreciate the process.  I value the work that it took to get to this point. As long as I’m doing what I love with the support from who I love, I feel successful. All I’ve ever wanted was to have a skill that no one could take away from me and I believe it’s simply my ability to create.

Not just Custom Unit Wigs but my ability to make the vision I see for myself come to life. Not only do I have a brand, I sell clothing online on multiple platforms, I have a YouTube channel where I teach budgeting, credit, and other things pertaining to the business world, but I’m also a writer; in which my newest book will release 2022! Having the courage to go after everything I want makes me successful!
